Re: Kubuntu Feisty Fawn - 7.04 is OUT!

For Edgy, I found the best way to set up my Nvidia GeF 7900GS PCI card was to use the Envy script installer found here:

    http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

But, he does not claim it will support installation under Feisty, and I have not tried it since I installed Feisty Beta some weeks ago. I saw a posting on Ubuntu Forums a couple days ago in which a guy said he had success using Envy in Feisty, but I don't recall what card he has, nor can I verify anything he claimed.

Meanwhile, I have personally found the new "nvidia-glx-new" package for Feisty, which has the latest Nvidia driver integrated, to be a perfectly satisfactory solution on my system. Moreover, using the package, rather than the downloaded Nvidia driver, provides the benefit of no breakage after a kernel upgrade.

So, that's the best advice I can give -- it does seem that different combinations of Nvidia cards and motherboards result in different levels of "easy" or "tough" when it comes to setting up the advanced features of these newer cards.

If not, post in the Feisty section under hardware about nVidia card problems. We can help further.

Unfortunately, this is unrelated to my problem. (I do not have problems whith the nvida card, but with the package manager trying to add x11-common module)

Re: Kubuntu Feisty Fawn - 7.04 is OUT!

I tried the upgrade from Edgy. This is the third time I have tried to 'upgrade' from one version of Ubuntu to another. As before I failed miserably. The error message as usual didn't give much away other than the upgrade couldn't continue because things would be broken. It would be nice if the installer could tell me directly what specifically would be broken (please don't tell me to go rummaging around the system looking for log files).

In the upgrade stakes Suse did it better, IMO.

OK, so tonite I'll download the ISO and will do a clean install.

IMO, as a desktop user, not a shell masochist, the upgrades from one version of (K)ubuntu to another really ought to be made more intuitive and robust.

Can't agree more upgrading should be as smooth as installing something and I hate reinstalling off the CD because then you have to remember everything you ever installed, customized, or set up. What a pain!!!!!!

              Hi all,
I am new here and have officially switched to Kubuntu Linux 7.04 (Fiesty Fawn). I must say I am very impressed. This is coming from someone who had Vista on his laptop. This distro rocks. Keep up the good work!

And has anyone tried upgrading wit out reinstalling? I like what i got and don't want to have to remember what all extra I installed from the repos AND I don't want to have to re-engineer my desktop. I'd stay with 6.1 if my usb card reader would work [someone says that's fixed in Feisty]
On this dual boot/ dual monitor (w2k/ kubuntu) machine, I started out with ubuntu (gnome base) Dapper and moved to Ubuntu edgy and switched to kubuntu edgy then finally to fiesty. Kde found the dual boot and the dual monitors and set them up for me with very little tweaking.

Not sure if this helps any
