Enjoy the Progress of Kubuntu 15.04 [Vivid]

I have now been trying out Vivid for about a week now. It is certainly being updated regularly. Yesterday, I had about 133 updates.

I noticed that it has been announced here that Vivid will be released with Plasma 5. In the announcement there is more development being made as reported by Jonathan Riddell
    Code:
There are some bits which are missing from Plasma 5 and we hope to fill
those in over the next six months. Click on our Todo board above if you want to
see what's in store and if you want to help out!
So hold onto your seats for a bumpy ride as Plasma 5 is added. Let's hope it puts Unity in its place.

Don't think it will be too bumpy for the most part. It is not the night and day that KDE3 to KDE4 was.
Do expect some missing plasma widgets here (though that has been dropping), a system settings module or two there, and some "old" plasma themes to look like butt, but for the most part it acts like the old plasma. I do hope that those folks who come up with these look and feel stuff jumo in to Plasma 5 quickly

In the land down under, bumpy rides can be lots of fun and I am looking forward to the ups and downs of the package updates that come down the pipe. At the moment I have plasma 5 on my utopic distribution and I am still finding that Widgets are lacking and are also limited in their relocation options. For example, I cannot locate the analogue clock in the top right corner.

On my vivid distribution, which doesn't have plasma 5, I currently have a red square with a white cross for lunar and KDE networkmanager. I expect to see it fixed as I am sure that I am not the only person with this problem, including the developers. This is a minor bump.

There are already a few Plasma5/KF5 packages in the vivid repos (systemsettings, kinfocenter, plasma-nm [plasma networkmanager widget]) so you'll likely have issues with those on Plasma4.

kubicle, I downloaded the latest image of Vivid 64bit yesterday and installed it as a guest OS using VirtualBox. It runs fine. I'd guesstimate that there are close to 100 widgets available. When I opened Systemsettings I was given almost nothing. None of the tools normally available. Vivid must be pre-alpha.

Were you able to maximize the Plasma 5 screen to a large size with VirtualBox? I could not with VMware Player.

I am now using the Plasma desktop and it is much better than what is available for Utopic. With Vivid I had found that when playing a DVD with VLC, I got sound but no picture. When I used Kaffeine, I got a picture but no sound. The solution I found was to install the AMD drivers (fglrx-amdcccle) for my video card (AMD Radeon HD 6310) and all is working as it should and it is much more responsive.

I decided to count the number of widgets and found that there were 43 - many more than I had with plasma on Utopic. I still have the red squares for the Lunar and the Network Manager. I am waiting patiently for these to be available - particularly, as Network Manager is critical for changing network settings.

Yes. I had tried VirtualBox 4.3.18 from Oracle's website but it didn't help with that problem on Utopic's Plasma 5 desktop. So, I purged 4.3.18 and returned to 43.10 and installed Vivid. It DOES give me a large screen.

So you used the Virtualbox version from Trusty instead of Vivid?
                    https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox
And with that, you could run Vivid Plasma 5 as a guest in a large screen?

                    Alas, my host is Win7.

Yes. I am going to stay with Trusty till it expires or I do. Since the repository version of VB automatically includes the guest additions I reverted to it instead of using the Oracle version. I only used the Oracle version because I read that 4.3.18 might work with Plasma in VB. It didn't. I deleted the Neon5 guest OS and installed Vivid as the guest OS instead.

Strange that (4.3.18 from Oracle) isn't working for you GreyGeek. Here:

                        Host:
                        ~ $ cat /etc/issue
                        Ubuntu 14.10 \n \l

                        ~ $ aptitude show virtualbox-4.3
                        Package: virtualbox-4.3
                        New: yes
                        State: installed
                        Automatically installed: no
                        Version: 4.3.18-96516~Ubuntu~raring
                        Priority: optional

                        Maintainer: Oracle Corporation <info@virtualbox.org>

                        Guest:
                        ronw@plasmavb:~$ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu Vivid Vervet (development branch) \n \l

                        ronw@plasmavb:~$ lsmod | grep vbox
                        vboxsf 43691 1
                        vboxvideo 12669 1

                        drm 310919 3 vboxvideo

The Vivid guest has all the Plasma 5 and Guest Addition goodness.

                          My host is Kubuntu 14.04.1
When I replaced the defunct Neon5 guest OS with the 14.10 plasma 5 I couldn't get guest additions to give me a large screen. I tried Oracle's 4.3.18 after some reported that it helped. It didn't for me. So, I reverted to vb 4.3.10 and installed the Vivid iso, which runs great and guest additions gives me the big screen.

I am now having a very bumpy ride with Vivid. For several days now after plasma updates, I lost my desktop settings and I no longer get the blue KDE startup but the neon version with limited widgets. I have been getting the following package errors:

From this list it looks like something is seriously wrong with the package sources. I have been waiting about 2 days to see if this problem recovers, but it still persists.

The current status of my desktop is that it is very easy for say System Settigs to crash and then recover. In fact, while doing this post, all the background turned black and after several minutes it recovered and I could continue with this post.

Is anyone else experiencing these problems? I hope it is not the repositories that I am using!

I'm waiting for plasma 5 to hit before I start testing. The daily live iso date is stuck at Nov. 6th, so things must be turbulent at the moment. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/current/
