I've done it two ways, by adding backports and running sudo apt-get upgrade which leaves the current screesaver in place from kde 4.9.4. Then there is no isssue, but not all of 4.9.95 is installed either, only upgrades to some of the packages. If I follow up sudo apt-get upgrade with a reboot and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade the fun begins. At that point the entire KDE environment upgrades to 4.9.95 and Sreen Saver is replaced by Screen Locker. As long as I don't have any screen saver set and don't go into screen locker ans change any settings all is fine.

It is a feature not needed on my personal system period, but apparently was added to screen locker as a security feature. It is a majopr annoyance. It would be nice to know which file is controling this so the feature could be commented out or the file editted to prevent it from engaging at all.

Well I finally got Kubuntu 12.10 loaded this morning since work was cancelled do to snow. So in the process I installed KDE 4.9.4 and all was good. I decided to give 4.9.95 a shot and then maybe install 13.04 alpha. I got 4.9.95 installed and screen locker reared it's ugly head. In the process I was getting one crash after another. so I reinstalled 12.10 upped it to 4.9.4 and decided that was good enough for now. I'll let those with the higher experience work out the bugs before trying again.

Not in any big rush to see 4.10 get here. I have been using RC1 and kscreenlocker sucks. It is annoying enough I reloaded my system today. I will be interested to see what happens by the release date.

Gnome are still in the 4.1-2 stages I think. but who knows if they will go the same way as kde. I doubt it as kde had a vision that they didn't really reach until 4.5+ where as gnome don't really have that, or at least from what I can tell (but I am heavily biased in this as I don't follow gnomes development)

KDE 4.10 RC1 packages are building for raring (most of it already built and available).
Like always, it's safer to wait until you can get all of the packages before upgrading to avoid compatibility issues...if unsure, wait for the announcement on kubuntu.org.
