I have been testing Kubuntu 26.04 for several days as my daily working environment (multi-monitor setup, Chrome, Thunderbird, suspend-then-hibernate, KDE applications, etc.).
In the end I decided to return to Kubuntu 24.04. None of the issues below are critical on their own, but the accumulation of many small problems made the overall experience less comfortable than 24.04 for me.

Wayland / Session Restore

1. With Wayland, multiple browser windows (non-Firefox browsers) are not properly restored after reboot. Only one instance is reopened.
This did not happen to me on Debian 12 with Wayland (KDE 5), which I used on another machine for about a year. Therefore, I am not sure whether this is a KDE 6 issue or a Wayland + Kubuntu issue.

2. With Wayland, if I leave files open in Kate and reboot the system, those files are not restored when Kate starts again.
3. The previous issue disappears when using X11.
Because of the above, I ended up installing and using X11, even though it is no longer the primary supported session.
Multi-Monitor / Window Placement

4. Multiple windows (browser download dialogs, Thunderbird dialogs, etc.) always open on the secondary monitor even though another monitor is configured as primary.
Even if I move them manually, the next time they appear they open on the secondary monitor again.
Dolphin / KDE Usability

5. PDF previews stored on other internal drives are not displayed.
6. Dolphin Settings always opens with a very small window size, requiring manual resizing in order to see all options comfortably.
7. I use single-click activation for files and folders. Selecting files now feels more difficult because the clickable/selection area is larger than before.

Plasma Widgets
8. This seems to be a KDE 6 issue.
System widgets such as Memory Usage, Total CPU Usage and Individual CPU Core Usage do not reliably keep their configuration after reboot.
Widget ordering and settings may change after restarting the system.
It is not a serious problem, but it affects usability.

Application Launcher
9. I use the "Application Dashboard" launcher.
I cannot manage the power-related favorites (shutdown, suspend, hibernate, etc.). I cannot remove them, reorder them, edit them or add them again from the application menu.
Right-click does nothing for these entries, while all other favorite entries work correctly.

Security / Desktop Integration
10. Immediately after login, KWallet asks to be opened.
11. If updates are available and Discover shows its notification icon, opening Discover allows installation without asking for a password. I am not sure whether this is intended behaviour or a bug.

Power Management
12. Suspend-then-hibernate is working correctly in Kubuntu 26.04 (which is a welcome improvement compared to the early days of 24.04).
However, inactivity timers appear inconsistent.
Example:

* Turn off screen after 10 minutes
* Suspend after 20 minutes

Sometimes I leave the computer for 25–30 minutes and everything is still active. Later, the screen finally turns off and suspension occurs.

I have been unable to identify which activity source is preventing the timers from triggering at the configured times. I do not observe this behaviour in 24.04.

Thunderbird / Wayland

13. In 2026, a common desktop workflow such as minimizing Thunderbird to the system tray is still not available under Wayland.
Under X11 this works correctly with Birdtray.
Wayland is supposed to be the future, but some long-standing desktop workflows are still not possible.
https://www.phoronix.com/news/KDE-Plasma-Wayland-Ex-X11

Positive Notes
Not everything was negative.
One pleasant surprise was that hd-idle appears to work correctly out of the box in Kubuntu 26.04. I no longer needed to install or configure it manually.
Overall, I did not encounter any critical failures, crashes or data loss.

However, the accumulation of many small issues made Kubuntu 26.04 less comfortable for my daily workflow than Kubuntu 24.04.
For now, I have decided to remain on 24.04 and revisit 26.04 at a later point.

Hi,

I tried to install Kubuntu 26.04 LTS onto a 4 year old custom build desktop.
The installation fails at the very end.
Any ideas on how to fix the above?

Also, I did not see an option when installing to encrypt the OS storage device?
Was the above taken away or moved somewhere else?

So, a couple of weekends back, I was doing my 25.10 updates (which completed). Then I was offered the 26.04 LTS upgrade - which I accepted, followed the prompts and left it to do it's thing.

Now, when I log off/out, I get back to the login screen/page ok, but my monitor doesn't drop back to standby/hibernate/sleep or whatever it's called. The login boxes do disappear, but the background screen remains. The only way I can manage it is to either hit the sleep or hibernate options, or of course, hit the off button on the monitor itself.

I did a bit of a search, but that said about it being managed by SDDM, which should be in the settings, but it's not. None of the suggested stuff shows up on my system as far as I can work out.

Any guidance is much appreciated........

System: Kubuntu 26.04 (Resolute), KDE Plasma (Wayland), kernel 7.0.0-22-generic, Logitech BRIO 4K (Logi 4K Stream Edition)

Problem: After a recent system update, the webcam shows a black screen in all Wayland apps — Slack, Microsoft Edge, GNOME Snapshot. The camera LED turns on, indicating the device is being opened, but no frames are received.

Root cause

The org.freedesktop.portal.Camera interface is completely absent from Ubuntu 26.04's packages. This interface is required for any Wayland app to receive camera frames — without it, apps open the device but get nothing back. Confirmed with:

Code:

Error: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: No such method "IsCameraPresent"

Further investigation confirmed the interface is missing across all four installed portal packages:

org.freedesktop.portal.Camera.xml not shipped by xdg-desktop-portal — dpkg -L xdg-desktop-portal | grep xml returns nothing

strings /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libexec/xdg-desktop-portal-kde | grep -i camera — empty

strings /usr/libexec/xdg-desktop-portal-gnome | grep -i camera — empty

All four packages (xdg-desktop-portal 1.21.1, xdg-desktop-portal-kde 6.6.4, xdg-desktop-portal-gnome 50.0, xdg-desktop-portal-gtk 1.15.3) have zero Camera support.

The camera hardware, uvcvideo driver, and PipeWire are all working correctly — this is purely a portal packaging failure.

I am currently trying to solve a KDE Plasma power management / PowerDevil configuration bug in Kubuntu 26.04 LTS.

Here it is, as an excerpt from sudo journalctl -b -p3:

Code:

[…]

[…]

In lack of a better idea I have tried to solve this by adding a udev rule in /etc/udev/rules.d/ …

But why doesn't this udev rule work?

SUBSYSTEM=="i2c-dev", KERNEL=="i2c-[0-9]*", TAG+="uaccess"
(which I would prefer over the following one)

This udev rule works…

SUBSYSTEM=="i2c-dev", KERNEL=="i2c-[0-9]*", MODE="0660", GROUP="users"
(after I had manually added the user originally created during installation to the users group with
sudo usermod -aG users $USER
- all subsequently created users are automatically added to the users group anyway…)

Afterwards (and after a reboot, of course) I was able to e.g. set a time for "Dim automatically:" in
-> System Settings -> Power Management (section: System) -> Display and Brightness

So does anyone have any ideas

why the first udev rule did not work or

how the permission configuration for KDE PowerDevil / i2c-devs could be handled better?

I have to admit that I wasn't paying attention during the update, and after the restart of my HP Elite SFF 805 G9 desktop PC I suddenly had no sound at all anymore.

I realized that Kubuntu 26.04 LTS on the HP had started with linux-image-7.0.0-1004-azure.
What the h…?!?

--> addition: this did not happen in a virtual machine or on another computer with Kubuntu 26.04 LTS. Their updates proceeded smootly and and resulted solely in linux-image-7.0.0-22-generic.

Something during today's update had led to the installation of linux-base-sgx, which then possibly must have installed the dependencies linux-image-7.0.0-1004-azure, linux-main-modules-zfs-7.0.0-1004-azure and linux-modules-7.0.0-1004-azure…- or vice versa?

I have had no time to search for the real culprit or dependencies, but
sudo apt purge linux-base-sgx
and a reboot solved it for now.

PS: And no, I don't have any NVIDIA graphics card and the CPU is AMD - not Intel (so no SGX here)…

--> addition
I still don't know exactly what has led to the installation of sgx/azure, but I have come up with three possible explanations:

some remnants of the developer release/beta version caused this (as the HP is the only computer/virtual machine on which I have not performed a clean installation following the official release.…)

an external repository (such as the one for VirtualBox) that is not used in any other of my Kubuntu 26.04 installations caused this

something hardware-specific of my HP desktop caused this (the most unlikely explanation IMHO).

Unless any further problems arise, I will mark this thread as "resolved"…

I found an issue when using two monitors. It was observed on KDE Plasma 6.6.4 and 6.6.5. To reproduce it, simply keep both monitors connected and let the system enter sleep mode (or force it), or turn the monitors off.

After waking the system and using the display settings shortcut (next to the clock) to disable one of the monitors, the display management system fails. Both monitors lose their configuration, and the only way to restore them is by reconfiguring everything manually.
