I moved over to Kubuntu about two months ago from Win11 and am still finding my way around.
I installed the latest (large) Ubuntu update, and since then, every time I drag any program window to the top of the screen, the whole PC freezes and cannot be recovered.

I have an NVIDIA graphics card, which I’ve heard can be related.
Any ideas?

Hi, most excellent Kubuntu designers and users.

I have been using "NVIDIA driver (open kernel) metapackage from nvidia-driver-595-open (proprietary, tested)" on 25.10 for multiple months and it worked beautifully.
The graphics card is a GeForce RTX 5070.
I upgraded my Kubuntu system to 26.04 LTS yesterday and the display now occasionally stutters in both X11 and Wayland when gaming. (It didn't stutter when playing the same game in 25.10.)
Can anyone provide knowledgeable advice or a link to information that will fix this?

Thank you very much in advance!

I'm currently on Kubuntu 26.04 LTS, but this problem is not new. I've had it since I installed the emacs-gtk deb on Kubuntu 25.10

When I grab the bottom edge of an emacs window to increase its window size, it may highlight a small increase, not corresponding to the amount I dragged by, then increase the length by some amount different from the highlighting - after a longish time interval. It may do nothing.

Resize from the more actions part of the per-window menu (context menu in toolbar, or left click on whatever glyph is in the upper left of the window title bar) behaves similarly.

I do not see this problem with other apps. In particular, I've been testing with LibreOffice Calc.

Any suggestions?

Note that there were multiple choices of emacs package to install, including at least two that seemed to be the same underlying emacs, with emacs available in a window as well as in a terminal window. Maybe the other one is more compatible with kde?

p.s. I have the new translucent windows feature turned off so am not getting additional hints to window state from it.

p.p.s. I can't get a screenshot of the behaviour because of limitations of Spectacle and/or my knowledge of how to use it effectively.

After upgrading to Kubuntu 26.04 LTS, and restoring at least part of my KDE configuration, I now have white text overlaying the virtual desktop display/control element in my panel.

If this had been described to me - names without having to hover with the mouse to get a tooltip - I would have expected to like it. But the names are truncated, and white on grey really isn't my favorite colour combination. I'd like to make it go away.

This is presumably controlled somewhere in settings, but not in the virtual desktops section, which hasn't changed.

If I knew what the feature was called, I could search for it - or I could step through every single section of settings looking for it and recognize it when I found it.

Unfortunately, I don't know what it's called and there are a lot off sub-screens in settings.

Also, it might not be controlled from settings. Maybe there's a context menu somewhere that controls this, if I can find enough empty space to invoke that menu.

So, does anyone know what this is called and how it is controlled?

An upgrade glitch lost me all my KDE configuration. (I trusted some bad advice. Oops.)

The GUI for creating and managing panels is not intuitive to me. Moreover, when I'm in the results of clicking "show panel configuration" I cannot see any instructions I may (or may not) have found for using it.

I have 2 monitors.I want two identical panels on the bottom of each monitor.

I don't want to create a new panel - which seemingly can't be placed, so winds up on the top of the first monitor, then find an edit option that lets me move it to the other monitor, but only to the top of that screen - still no apparent way to place it. And then drag and drop elements to each panel, having to add them twice each time I remember another one I previously had.

The first time I set this up I had an intro for newbies that I *may* be able to find again, but was never able to get precisely what I wanted.

Hence my query: is there an editable config file, with accurate documentation, so I can bypass this GUI?!

I'm on Kubuntu 26.04 LTS, KDE Plasma 6.6.4 KDE Frameworks 6.24.0

Failing that, could someone point me to the latest and greatest documentation for the GUI tool? Ideally for a version that's functionally identical - IIRC the GUI tool for Kubuntu 24.10 behaved somewhat differently to what I see today, and also probably differently from the docs I had available.

Upgrade: DO NOT mv .config to .config.prev -- I lost all/most of my kde configuration

I just upgraded from 25.10 to 26.04 LTS. I followed someone's advice to mv $HOME/.config to $HOME/.config.prev and was not too surprised when I lost all my kde configuration.

So I went through all the files and directories in $HOME/.config.prev, and mv'd any that seemed missing or changed from my previous settings into .config, and then rebooted.

My carefully setup configuration is still lost.

I copied .config/plasma-worskpace, but I nonetheless have lost my workspaces.

I have none of my changes to my panel(s). But then, I have no idea where they were stored, and might not have copied the right thing/hand merged it correctly.

etc. etc. etc.

This was supposed to be a caution against potential upgrade breakage. Instead, it *created* breakage I really didn't want, and hand merging the files didn't fix things as I'd been told to expect, in part for lack of comments explaining the various files.

I strongly advise other newbies to ignore the advice about moving .config for upgrade "safety". As far as plasma and probably other programs are concerned I might as well have done a fresh install. If not moving .config gets you in trouble, the worst you'll have to deal with is a fresh install and recovering from backup. And what I just got feels almost that bad, given that my backups include a list of packages to "apt install" and "apt remove".

New to Kubuntu. In Pop-OS and Fedora I was able to encrypt the hard drive on my pc at the time of installing the OS. I realized after I was changing a second PC to Kubuntu that neither it or the first PC offered to encrypt my hard drive as the ISO was installed. I have found a few posting here and there suggesting there is a very small box to click in the KDE partition manager program. If it is there my eyes can't find it. When I did the install I just allowed it to do the default install and did not ask for any special customizations. The hard drive had a boot partition with fat32 and the /dev/sda2 is ext 4. Drive is 2 TiB.

The only other info I have been able to glean is that possibly I would need to do custom partitioning to get encryption to work.

Any help would be appreciated. If I need to do a reinstall that is fine. Using 26.04 at this time.

Hi, I am trying to take the plunge to Linux again for my desktop. I have tried to make the switch in the past (a long time ago, in the RedHat 5 and early Suse days) but ended up back at Windows for daily desktop use. In the years between, I have been using Ubuntu server on small home servers (old pc's, zimaboard/blade, etc.) so I know my basic way around.

Because in the past I have bricked installations (I was young and carefree back then ) I want to be very sure about the bootloader. But that was a long time ago, and things have surely evolved since then. What I want to do is:

Retain the current Windows installation and the Windows boot manager on my nvme ssd.

Install Kubuntu 26.04 on a separate ssd (sda)

Have the bootloader for linux be separate from the windows boot manager.

Be able to select both the windows boot manager as well as the linux bootloader in the BIOS as boot options. I want to set the linux bootloader as the default option. From there, I can then boot either into Linux or Windows. But if I want, I should be able to go into the bios and boot Windows directly. Either as a one-time override or by setting Windows as the default boot option again.

So now the question: if during installation I create a 512 MB fat32 partition with a boot flag and mount point /boot/efi, will the Kubuntu installer automatically use that partition for the bootloader? And will it leave the Windows boot manager intact? Or do I need to tell the installer explicitly to put the bootloader there? If so, where? I did not see that option anywhere in the Kubuntu installer. But iirc I did see it in the Ubuntu installer. Hence the question, I want to be absolutely sure before attempting this.

Hey everyone, I’m new to Linux and using Kubuntu right now. I’m trying to set it up so when I press the physical power button my PC just goes into standby, does anyone know how to do that? Also I’ve got this weird problem where it goes into standby but then just turns back on by itself after a bit and I’m back at the login screen… anyone know what’s going on or how to fix it?
Hello,

Making my way to get used to linux on a desktop. I'm having problems booting up kubuntu after installing the latest nvidia graphics drivers. My kubuntuOS is version 24.04 LTS.

I have just built a PC with these specs:
CPU - AMD 9800X3D,
GPU - RTX 5070 Ti,
RAM - 32GB.

ALSO, I received this message when booting up kubuntu for the first time. What is it and should I be worried?:

'RDSEED32 is broken. Disabling the corresponding CPUID bit'

In addition I have also tried multiple times to download KubuntuOS 26.04 LTS onto a flash drive but had no luck with balena Etcher, so I used rufus but got this message before proceeding:

'The image you have selected is an ISOHybrid, but its creators have not made it compatible
with ISO/File copy mode. As a result, DD image writing mode will be enforced'.

Now my USB drive is split into 2 partitions, but I think it is OK to use to boot up the computer if I need to do a complete BIOS reboot/wipe. I don't have anything of value saved into my SSDs so it should be fine. Looking for feedback and workarounds ASAP as I tackle these issues this week.

Thanks in advance!

How Do I Debug Performance Problems? Are colord-sane and/or snapd known to be raging cpu hogs?

My Kubuntu 25.10 system tied itself in knots, to the point I couldn't see mouse movement, or reliably modify Libre-Office calc files. The shell command uptime reported load averages like 158.83 This went on for an hour or more, until I finally gave up and rebooted. I also note that the system had been up for 15 days, which might just be longer than kubuntu's tested uptime, given the frequency of minor updates.

While the KDE desktop was essentially unusable during this period, though not actually hung, I was able to ssh into the system and run top.

Really high cpu times were reported from kswapd0, snapd, systemd-jo+, plasmashell, colord-sane, and various kworker threads. (systemd-jo+ was presumably a truncated command)

"memory" usage was not notably elevated.

The "fun" started approximately when I launched a script that backs up user space to an external drive, using rsync.

---
What I want to know is how to debug this. I'd like to submit good quality bug reports to whichever upstream projects are responsible for the mess.

I'd also like to find workarounds, and possibly replace misbehaving packages with other sources of similar functionality. (Given what was on the list, that may be difficult.)

I'm an old Unix developer, and not afraid of debugging tools, profiling tools, or log files. I've even been known to look at misbehaving kernels.

What I don't know is what all these processes are or which packages they belong to. I also don't know much about current linux tools for debugging performance issues. I don't even know much about where it keeps its logs or how to read them. Is syslogd still a thing? On kubuntu?

My inclination from past experience is to suspect the desktop environment, broadly construed, but I'm a new user of kde and wayland (less than 3 months) with a corresponding lack of knowledge.

Is there a performance-debugging FAQ somewhere? Particularly one specific to Kubuntu, since I suspect involvement of both kde and snapd.

Is there a known issue?
---

Note that I don't plan to try too hard to sort this out while still on Kubuntu 25.10. The 26.04 LTS is available, and I'll probably move to it before the system's been up for another 15 days. (Why do you think I was running a backup?) But I rather doubt whatever bug(s) I hit will turn out to have been fixed in 26.04 - moved around a bit, maybe, but probably not fixed.

Also, FWIW, The system was up to date as of about 15 days ago, except for firefox, which I "pinned" after a forced update from snap was found in progress during my last Kubuntu not-quite-hang. The backup script on the other hand has been run many times without any similar incidents.

[Edited to add: I found dpkg -S. So I'm on the way to identifying the processes.

colord-sane is from the colord package, which is used by KDE. I can't really imagine why it accumulated so much cpu time.

Kswapd0 is the kernel page out demon, which should only be this busy if something is grabbing loads of memory. Maybe the backup thrashed the file system cache, particularly if it's a combined cache - executable pages and ordinary files together. Still odd that this hadn't happened other times that the backup script was run.]
