New to Kubuntu. In Pop-OS and Fedora I was able to encrypt the hard drive on my pc at the time of installing the OS. I realized after I was changing a second PC to Kubuntu that neither it or the first PC offered to encrypt my hard drive as the ISO was installed. I have found a few posting here and there suggesting there is a very small box to click in the KDE partition manager program. If it is there my eyes can't find it. When I did the install I just allowed it to do the default install and did not ask for any special customizations. The hard drive had a boot partition with fat32 and the /dev/sda2 is ext 4. Drive is 2 TiB.

The only other info I have been able to glean is that possibly I would need to do custom partitioning to get encryption to work.

Any help would be appreciated. If I need to do a reinstall that is fine. Using 26.04 at this time.

I have installed Kubuntu 26.04 minimal edition on two machines. On one computer graphic shell scripts (installers for games from GOG) don't work. Yes, I have made them executable. Nothing happens when I click them. No error message, no crash. They run in terminal mode (Right click -> Run in terminal) but just in terminal mode, not as usual graphic installers. Once installed the games run OK. Since I made a minimal install of Kubuntu I suspect there may be some missing dependencies. But the scripts run OK on my other computer, also with a minimal install of Kubuntu.
I noticed this a while ago but just today decided to address it:

I have 3 users on my system, but the login greeter only shows one of them. The users are Lisa, Stuart, Trevor.

Here's what I've checked:

Output of file command:

Code:

/home/lisa/.face: PNG image data, 512 x 512, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced
/home/stuart/.face: PNG image data, 512 x 512, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced
/home/trevor/.face: PNG image data, 246 x 246, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced

Output of getfacl command:

Code:

# file: home/lisa/.face
# owner: lisa
# group: lisa
user::rwx
group::r-x
other::r-x

# file: home/stuart/.face
# owner: stuart
# group: stuart
user::rwx
group::r-x
other::r-x

# file: home/trevor/.face
# owner: trevor
# group: trevor
user::rwx
group::r-x
other::r-x

So all three files are the same type and settings. Also, all three faces show in System Settings > Users, just not on the login screen.

The only differences I can see are:

trevor/.face is a different size.

stuart/ also contains a symlink to .face as .face.icon.

lisa is first alphabetically.

I'm going to try a way to test the alphabetical factor.

None of the above should make a difference but anything is possible. If anyone has an idea of what else I could look at, it would be appreciated.

EDIT: Adding a user name "Bob" did not change the face behavior. Bob has a face icon that does not show. Lisa still is the only face showing.

I have a Latitude 7490 that I primarily run Kubuntu on but dual boot to Windows 10 for a few things that can't be done on Linux. I've had it for about a year and a half and am finally getting comfortable in the environment but still am working to learn the higher level stuff. I recently had to replace my laptop due to tornado damage but was able to save the hard drive and swapped it into an identical refurbished one from the same vendor where I got my first one, except this one has a thunderbolt port. It's a super nice option and I would love to ditch the barrel plug for charging but for some reason it is limiting the charge rate in Kubuntu to 40 watts. I have one of the new smart chargers from Anker and can see exactly what wattage, amps and voltage each device is drawing. During post and in Windows it draws 60 which is what the barrel plug delivers (apparently there's a 90 watt barrel plug option and Dell's documentation says TB3 can go up to 100 but I'd be happy with 60).

I've been digging around and can't find anything that would limit the negotiation in Linux, but since I can literally see it charging at 60w until the login screen pops up and then drop to 40w it's pretty obvious that something software related is limiting it. I tried updating the Bios and TB firmware but nothing changed on charge rate. Anyone have an idea of how to start tracking this down?

The name for Kubunto 26.10, Stonking Stingray has been released at:

As Kubuntu 26.10 follows the same naming convention as Ubuntu I have taken the liberty to modify the above reference for Kubuntu with it's scheduled release on the 15th October 2026. Following the alphabetical tradition, this interim release has the name "stonking" which a British slang for something huge or impressive. The term Stingray is for a boneless fish found in coastal waters around the world as well as in Australia. It lives close to the seabed, often partially buried in sand and some have been stung by the barb in its tail. So I am not sure everyone will appreciate this name but it is the best for the SS name required - I hope we will all get to enjoy this name and the extra features it will provide.

Key Details for Kubuntu 26.10 "Stonking Stingray" are:

Release Date: October 15, 2026.

Release: September 24, 2026.

I am currently using 24.04 but would like to upgrade later on. The problem is my Nvidia GeForce 730 graphics card, which uses the Nvidia 430 driver. I understand this driver is no longer supported by Nvidia, and besides it doesn't work on Wayland anyway, from my own experience. So I guess I'll have to upgrade my card unless I want to stay on X11, which is being supported any more. My question, is there a Nvidia card which works on Wayland and has the same basic characteristics of my current video card? Any recommendations? I presume 26.04 will automatically find the correct Nvidia driver. I do not do any gaming, except for Universe Sandbox and Space Engine, which no longer works on Linux, but I do watch videos. I appreciate any help, as I don't want to upgrade until I have the necessary hardware.

I'm currently off work for awhile, so I figured I'd actually take the time to fix it

keyd is a new-ish way to map or re-map keys so I'm trying to use it to do some things without the old school way of editing the keyboard maps. However, I'm having no luck getting what I want.

The way it works isn't correctly or clearly defined in the manpage IMO. It doesn't remap characters it remaps keys. To explain the difference, if you put this in the config file: a = b when you press a you get a b, and when you press A you get B. What I want to do reverse the characters on two keys: tilde/grave and bar/backslash but it doesn't work. I entered:

` = ~
~ = `

and when I press grave I get tilde, but when I press tilde (aka shift-grave) I still get tilde.

If I'm configuring keyd wrong, let me know. Otherwise it's back to old school.

Hi all,
I just switched from Kubuntu 24.04 to 26.04.
Now I have a problem with app windows and even the mouse pointer, since they show an obsessive kind of megnetism or sticking to the screen border when coming close or touching it.

I tried all kind of buttons in my System settings to get rid of that, but nothing seem to help.

Since I have a loptop plus a normal screen with different resolutions, this drives me completely crazy when moving programs or trying to resize the windows while it keeps trying to jump to the borders.

Keeping moving does not help. It needs a certain velocity to pass the obstacle, making it often impossible to position or resize a window exactly.

With 24.04 and KDE 5.27 I did not experience it as a problem.
The sole mouse pointer was not attracted by screen borders at all.
When dragging a window, just a tiny little snap occured, but it was so soft and litte, that it was nearly inrecognizable.

Does anyone know how to set this, so that it behaves like 24.04 KDE?
Thanks a lot for all hints
