When ever I reboot the 14.04 machine I have for some reason or look at its GUI and see the BRIGHT COLORFUL look of it.. I get annoyed when comparing to current releases..

I miss that look, and even the BOUNCING ICONS on the boot screen from KDE3.. yeah I know its not likely that its booted too often to see.. but still...

I've searched for something that would bring that back vs the drab gulag theme and look of current KDE releases...

Any one got a theme that brings back this look

So I decided to a test of 26.10 just to see what last hurray will be there since KDE 6.7 is the default... which led to the idea that hmmmm... any updates to KDE 6.8 via backports etc. would need to be BLOCKED. Probably a good idea for the 26.04 ESR's too!

So whats the best method of this, I do NOT WISH to hammer this with disabling backports repo, but just nuking KDE being updated beyond 6.7.x

I don't do auto upgrades and updating, period. But since I need to reeducate my brain to not just do this and then get a KDE 6.8 which will break X11....when I do the normal updates in the CLI...

I am looking at something along the lines of:

But I am not an apt pinning guru, and I want to be sure I being granular enough that the 6.7 branch of KDE is fine to update, but anything beyond that is NOT acceptable. Now possibly others have figured this out and if kde-session-x11 is installed, that blocks things? Don't know... but I don't want to rely on that as in most cases people make choices which are opposite of my choices/desires in this space ala auto updates, upgrades and notifications of updates/upgrades available.. don't care thanks.

Just for edification for other X11 refugees X11 was SUCCESSFULLY RESTORED in 26.10 for my KVM testing setup, and LightDM was installed to permit XDMCP along with Xephyr for that setup.

When you have folders starting with "a", for example

aa1
aa2
aa3
aa4
aa5

and I choose aa4 with my mouse, aa4 gets selected.
When I press on 'A' on my keyboard, instead of going to the NEXT folder starting with 'A', which would be aa5, the selection would jump back to aa1.

Whatever the first letter is, whether it is a file or folder, that was the previous behavior.
They fixed it.

Now, I can have a folder with thousands of files and folder with various names. This is about my mothers laptop which I prepared for upgrade to 26.04 (from 24.04) but somehow I did the epic mistake not to copy the folder with all the files I had collected for the transfer

I realized my mistake shortly after starting the 26.04 installation which means that first:

1. I changed the partition table to increase the EFI folder´s size (sda1) from 100MB to 300 MB (I think) because 26.04 required me to do so.
2. Kubuntu 24.04 was on sda5, so I shrinked it a bit and moved it to the right. I did that so I could also move the sda2,3,4 partitions (windows etc) to the right. This means that I understand/handle/describe the partitions in a linear way, just like kparted shows on its gui.
3. I chose regional settings etc, started the installation and after 10-15 minutes I realized my blunder and canceled the installation.

I am now booting the laptop live from the 2604 usb.

I have tried Testdisk with ¨deeper search¨ but it takes forever and does not find anything. I left it overnight. One thing here, the laptop went to sleep too, so I cannot be sure it worked 100%. I also tried RLinux but no good. It saw the old partition, tried to make an image but I do not find contents. Another utility I tried is Hetman Partition Recovery software but no luck.

Any ideas?

I'm on an AMD computer and having what I can only assume are graphics issues- I'm not sure exactly what caused them but I guess either I installed an update that wasn't ready or the program itself updated to become slightly incompatible. A theory I saw is that the graphics card could be dying, but I doubt it since it's fairly new and it only has problems in very specific cases. (I'd rather be optomistic anyway)

I'm getting occasional graphics issues from openGL renderers, and suddenly Deadlock's been stalling after only a couple of minutes of play. Those are the only things I've noticed having problems so far (but that second one could be out of my hands).

Anyway, I've been trying to fix it but I don't understand what to do. I've looked at other help topics and they imply I don't use AMD drivers? I downloaded the .deb from the official website in case I need it but haven't done anything else because these other topics have me confused. I ran glxinfo -B | grep "OpenGL" and Mesa is 26.0.8, which isn't up to date as I checked... running flatpak list | grep Mesa shows it should be 26.2.4 but running flatpak upgrade says "nothing to do." sudo apt upgrade didn't do anything as it was all up to date, allegedly. Also, checking drivers in GUI in driver manager shows "No additional drivers available."

From what I understand Mesa is, itself, a driver for AMD systems using Linux? How would I update it to hopefully fix my problems? Discover also doesn't have a pending Mesa update. Is there anything else I should be doing? I was deleting a VM using libvirt KVM GUI and for some reason that I could not glean, it would let me delete the VM but not the storage image, claiming I didn't have permission. The VM itself was Kubuntu 24.10 I created a while ago. Looking into the images folder and all the files there are root:root owned and permissions the same. So I deleted the image file manually. Testing with other VMs, no problem deleting any of the other image files from KVM.

Anyway, this lead me to dig a bit deeper to see what I had messed up. I have mucked about with QEMU/KVM a bit in the past but have no recollection of what I changed except to move all the folders out of /var to a separate EXT4 partition so I could avoid using NoCOW and to make the installation file system more compact. I range from 10 to 20 or so VMs off and on, so it uses a lot of drive space.

What I discovered - and the point of this post - is quite a few of the folders and files in the virtual machine storage are set with group 991 but this group doesn't exist on my system. Additionally, there is a libvirt group in my groups but it's group number is 135. Preliminary web searches show that RedHat uses group 991 for libvert.

It seems probable that libvert as group 135 was already on my system before I mucked about with it and somehow along the way, KVM is configured to use 991.

I ran a "find" command to see if any files or folders on my system are group 135 and could find none.

I'm wondering if any other QEMU/KVM users on here are seeing the same as I am. Odd thing is I've had no problem using KVM until this deletion thing today.

C2 had Kubuntu installed, and the RDP from C1 to C2 worked, then for some reason, I formatted and reinstalled Kubuntu on C2, in an attempt to fix a different issue.
Now I cannot get RDP to work from C1 to C2. I can remote in Via SSH so I know the IP address works. The network connection is good.
No settings for RDP on C1 have been changed. Those have remained the same, minus what ever windows updates have come out in the past several months.

When RDP was working, I had a dedicated Nvidia 2060 installed, and have since removed it, and gone to on board graphics.
I just want this machine to be a media station, and VM server. But want a GUI installed. I do not want to walk over to it, every time I want to make a change to something that requires a GUI.
Does KRDP need a graphics card installed? Everything is enabled for KRDP, all the proper settings are in place.
RDP tries to connect, then just asks for the password again. I use bitvise which is based on Putty, and windows RDP.

The way bitvise works is you connect via SSH. Once connected, it has a RDP connection it can do over SSH. Kind of neat. I use that instead of Windows RDP, as Microshaft has made changes to Windows RDP that just do not work for the average user.
