System: Kubuntu 26.04 (Resolute), KDE Plasma (Wayland), kernel 7.0.0-22-generic, Logitech BRIO 4K (Logi 4K Stream Edition)

Problem: After a recent system update, the webcam shows a black screen in all Wayland apps — Slack, Microsoft Edge, GNOME Snapshot. The camera LED turns on, indicating the device is being opened, but no frames are received.

Root cause

The org.freedesktop.portal.Camera interface is completely absent from Ubuntu 26.04's packages. This interface is required for any Wayland app to receive camera frames — without it, apps open the device but get nothing back. Confirmed with:

Code:

Further investigation confirmed the interface is missing across all four installed portal packages:

org.freedesktop.portal.Camera.xml not shipped by xdg-desktop-portal — dpkg -L xdg-desktop-portal | grep xml returns nothing

strings /usr/libexec/xdg-desktop-portal-gnome | grep -i camera — empty

All four packages (xdg-desktop-portal 1.21.1, xdg-desktop-portal-kde 6.6.4, xdg-desktop-portal-gnome 50.0, xdg-desktop-portal-gtk 1.15.3) have zero Camera support.

The camera hardware, uvcvideo driver, and PipeWire are all working correctly — this is purely a portal packaging failure.

So a picture is worth a 1000 words... but I can't seem to get the screenshot loaded here... so the issue is I have an 8TB external hard drive, in KDE Partition manager it shows 7.28TB but down lower in the window it shows 7.28Tb with 21.61GB used and when I format the drive the system only sees about 1.3TB of the 7.28. This is a drive I have been using for Timeshift backups. While my system was Kubuntu 24.04. I just recently upgraded to 26.04 and went to run Timeshift when I started running into a series of odd issues. The biggest is Timeshift would fail to complete the back up.

After upgrading from 25.10 to 26.04, whenever I try to login to x11 with 26.04 I just get a black screen with a wire mouse pointer which hangs for a couple of minutes then it returns to the login screen.

I have tried everything to get it working even reinstalling the whole desktop with

Code:

But nothing is helping and when I come back from X11 to wayland all my panels, i.e. taskbars are gone, so I have to reboot the system to get wayland back to it's current state.

I need to test some issues I'm having with wayland and I know my system was working perfectly with X11 on 25.10, so need to get back to x11 for a comparison to help isolate the cause.

Also certain tools like lact just simply do not work with wayland, i.e. it cannot open a window and I do not pretend to understand why so please don't interrogate me over that.

Obviously all my drivers are up to date, etc.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I have also tried adding a new test user to see if the problems are local to me or system wide and the issue does happen to the test user too.
I've written a small script that you can run after installing Kubuntu. The script is editable, and you can enable or disable certain features. It configures a number of optimizations, fixes and enhances the system with a few packages. This could be helpful to some of you.

NVIDIA and Plex server issue. Now have no display output at all

Sigh, I had a good run with Kubuntu generally working ok but a couple of weeks ago following a routine bunch of updates I had issues with Plex server...

Sigh, I had a good run with Kubuntu generally working ok but a couple of weeks ago following a routine bunch of updates I had issues with Plex server not being seen (client and server are on same box). The media locations are all still owned by Plex so I'm not expecting a permission issue and I can access them to playback in other apps.

Unable to fix Plex, I tried to watch a movie via VLC having switched the display output to 4k as I usually do. It ran poorly with a lot of stutter leading me to look to nvidia. In driver manager, I've switched between driver version 530 (tested) and 580 (the latest supporting my 1050 GPU). Weirdly Plex seems to be able to connect to the media drives if I use nvidia v530 but not 580 but runs poorly (as does VLC in both).

Perplexed by the odd nvidia / Plex, I've purged and reinstalled nvidia driver 580 and still have the same issue. I suspect I'm no longer outputting via the GPU, only the onboard GFX as CPU usage spikes to 70 - 99% on playback. The GPU is physically installed and connected. I'm pretty sure I used

Code:

nvidia-smi

to check it's seen.Via the nvidia app I've set it to on demand and performance (on separate boot ups) but I note that the app doesn't show the menu options in the left of the image below (not mine, just illustrative)

<img title="image.png" data-attachmentid="692476" width="639" height="314" data-align="none" border="0" src="filedata/fetch?id=692476&d=1780247263&type=thumb" alt="Click image for larger version

In a moment of "what can I try next?", I installed nvidia 590 driver but upon reboot now I get no display output at all, just a "no HDMI input" message from the display itself. That was clearly my biggest error. I'm going off memory for a lot of what I did so bear with. I think I used

Code:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-590

to install 590.

Now, with no output at all, I've tried to use both Escape and Shift (on separate attempts) to log into Grub on boot in an effort to revert the driver back to nvidia v580 but still no output detected on the display.

Recap in brief:
4k playback is choppy in VLC and Plex
GPU may not be in use
Nvidia driver 580 seems to coincide with an issue in Plex client not seeing the server
Nvidia driver 530 results in normal Plex access
Both 530 and 580 have stuttering in 4k media play

I only tend to use the machine at weekends as a media box to watch movies hence the issue has been protracted over a couple of weeks.

Running Kubuntu 24.04 LTS.
GPU is a 1050ti and I'm using nvidia driver version 530 and 580.The 1050 GPU is only supported upto driver 580 I (now) believe.

So, are my options to torch it and reinstall 24.04 from an SD card?

Apologies for the long read and thanks in advance to anyone how can advise.
In lack of a better idea I have tried to solve this by adding a udev rule in /etc/udev/rules.d/ …

But why doesn't this udev rule work?

This udev rule works…

SUBSYSTEM=="i2c-dev", KERNEL=="i2c-[0-9]*", MODE="0660", GROUP="users"
(after I had manually added the user originally created during installation to the users group with
- all subsequently created users are automatically added to the users group anyway…)

Afterwards (and after a reboot, of course) I was able to e.g. set a time for "Dim automatically:" in
-> System Settings -> Power Management (section: System) -> Display and Brightness

So does anyone have any ideas

why the first udev rule did not work or

how the permission configuration for KDE PowerDevil / i2c-devs could be handled better?

I have to admit that I wasn't paying attention during the update, and after the restart of my HP Elite SFF 805 G9 desktop PC I suddenly had no sound at all anymore.

I realized that Kubuntu 26.04 LTS on the HP had started with linux-image-7.0.0-1004-azure.
What the h…?!?

--> addition: this did not happen in a virtual machine or on another computer with Kubuntu 26.04 LTS. Their updates proceeded smootly and and resulted solely in linux-image-7.0.0-22-generic.

Something during today's update had led to the installation of linux-base-sgx, which then possibly must have installed the dependencies linux-image-7.0.0-1004-azure, linux-main-modules-zfs-7.0.0-1004-azure and linux-modules-7.0.0-1004-azure…- or vice versa?

I have had no time to search for the real culprit or dependencies, but
sudo apt purge linux-base-sgx
and a reboot solved it for now.

PS: And no, I don't have any NVIDIA graphics card and the CPU is AMD - not Intel (so no SGX here)…

--> addition
I still don't know exactly what has led to the installation of sgx/azure, but I have come up with three possible explanations:

some remnants of the developer release/beta version caused this (as the HP is the only computer/virtual machine on which I have not performed a clean installation following the official release.…)

an external repository (such as the one for VirtualBox) that is not used in any other of my Kubuntu 26.04 installations caused this

something hardware-specific of my HP desktop caused this (the most unlikely explanation IMHO).

Unless any further problems arise, I will mark this thread as "resolved"…

Ubuntu Version:

Desktop Environment (if applicable):
Example: GNOME, KDE Plasma, XFCE, Budgie, etc.

Problem Description:
Libsane has been replaced by libsane1 so Brother’s install script fails.

Before running the install script ( linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.6-0 for instance) from Brother’s website do this:

mkdir /var/spool/lpd

install this:

apt-get install lib32z1 curl libsane1

Then open the installer file with a suitable editor that allows “search/find and replace” such as l3afpad and replace all instances of libsane with libsane1.

Then run the installer.

After a successful install, if you are Europe/UK based and use A4 instead of Letter, modify the two files in /usr/local/Brother/printer/”model of your printer”/inf

brmfc885cwfunc

and

brmfc885cwrc changing the “Letter” to A4.

This stops the top of the page being cut off on A4 paper.

There are other posts that resolve some issues but not all.

I found an issue when using two monitors. It was observed on KDE Plasma 6.6.4 and 6.6.5. To reproduce it, simply keep both monitors connected and let the system enter sleep mode (or force it), or turn the monitors off.

After waking the system and using the display settings shortcut (next to the clock) to disable one of the monitors, the display management system fails. Both monitors lose their configuration, and the only way to restore them is by reconfiguring everything manually.

Has anyone experienced this issue or knows a solution for it? Thank you.

Hello, i am new to Kubuntu, and i have noticed that when my pc falls into sleep mode after some period of inactivity, usually after 30 minutes, then when i wake it up by pressing on the mouse, and i am met with the login screen, but then my keyboard does not work at all, my numlock is automatically on and does not turn off even if i press on it, i just simply cannot type in my password, keyboard is on but does not react at all when i press But my mouse works and i can move it around and even click and it works, i can click to go back into sleep mode by clicking it which does that, or to switch users which leads to a freeze, the solution i found is that i usually hard restard by holding the power off/on button and only then it starts into kubuntu as usual, but i do not want to hard restart every single time after leaving my laptop for more than 30 minutes. i had this problem as soon as i booted into Kubuntu the first time (yesterday) so i have not touched any important files or anything, it was like this from the start.

i dual booted linux, i followed every instruction on youtube, seems like i did everything right. But this problem is weird. If anyone had a similar problem and fixed it, or if someone more experienced knows what this is caused by and how to fix it i would be very thankful.
