Relevant Specs (full list at bottom of post)
OS: Kubuntu 25.10 (dual booted with windows 11)
KDE Plasma Version: 6.4.5
Kernel Version: 6.17.0-22-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
CPU: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 7700X 8-Core Processor
GPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X 8-Core Processor
Memory: 32 GiB of RAM (30.2 GiB usable)
Motherboard: MSI B650 Gaming Plus Wifi

Before i say anything else. I want to specify this: None of these shutdowns have occurred on windows. I dual-boot and i can confirm that these shutdowns are purely linux exclusive.

For the last month or so i have been experiencing frequent shutdowns whenever i use my linux computer. Please note that while i will be using the word ‘shutdown’ to describe them. These are more similar to pressing the power button on the PC rather than shutting down through the OS itself.

While there may be shutdowns that fall outside of the following moulds. It usually goes something like this:

Type 1: Computer remains online for several hours. Shutdowns are random in this state. Usually lasts for a day or two

Type 2: Shutdowns occur on key press. But only when the computer has not received input for 5-10 minutes while performing a sedentary activity (ie: watching a youtube video, listening to music, remaining idle). This is the longest lasting state by far. Usually lasting anywhere from 1-3 days. Sometimes whenever i power on the computer after one of these the screen is completely blank, and i have to power it on and off again.

Type 3: Shutdown consistently occur within 1 minute of making it past the GRUB screen. Most of the time this occurs at the boot screen. Though sometimes it can occur within around 20 seconds after booting into the desktop environment. These states only last for roundabout an hour maximum. But they do have the power to get on my nerves the most.

Most of the time these shutdowns are a constant loop of type 2 and type 3. With type 1 occasionally appearing before leading into the loop again.
Sometimes these shutdowns will cause the computer to stop recognising the bluetooth adapter. though this can be easily fixed by power cycling the machine.

Things i have tried to combat this problem:

Toggling hibernation mode on windows

Adjusting cable connections between PC parts (may have helped to trigger type 1 shutdowns though i am not sure about this and it may just be coincidence)

Running BurnInTest (no errors)

Running Memtest86 (no errors)

Power cycling the computer

Changing the CPU power management profile via terminal

Plugging the other end of the PSU cable into a wall socket instead of a powerboard.

Switching Distros (Regata OS to kubuntu)

Disabling C-States

Updating the BIOS (removed linux from UEFI boot entries)

As seen above i speculate some underlying linux driver is messing with the computer or a UEFI setting is messing with Linux. Based on the posts I’ve seen while researching this may be something CPU-specific. However I am confident that this is not a hardware issue. Not only for the reasons listed above but also because i have a brother with the exact same PC build as mine running windows 11 and he has not reported any random shutdowns thus far. I’m completely stumped here so if anyone could offer any help it would be appreciated immensely.

Scroll to bottom for system specs

So I'm two days into my installed kubuntu OS (dual-booting with win11) with a BTRFS file system. and I've encountered an issue with file permissions.
My user is able to read and write to my computer no problem. sudo works too. the problem I'm having is with apps.

For whatever reason. every app either install from a .deb file, or installed from the default ubuntu repo is automatically denied permissions to the root folder. Meaning any app that isn't self contained or already running in a sandbox (snap, flatpak, appimage) will fail to launch. Funnily enough. The one type of app that can access these folders are the self-contained ones themselves! This probably marks a departure from 99% of these types of issues on this forum. Though the discover client itself refuses to install flatpaks. I assume it's a permissions issue with external repos or something like that.

I've just come out the other end of a nasty BIOS update that wiped my linux install from the boot order. Following instructions in a telegram channel from a dev i had recently crashed out on. On an OS i stopped using a couple days afterwards. So safe to say my permissions might be a little scuffed.Though I'm not actually sure how they're scuffed but i think you guys can figure that out. I've already tried running these apps as sudo and it spits out an Error: Cannot run as root user.

Hello guys,

I just tried Kubuntu 25.10 Questing Quokka on my Dell Latitude 7320 Detachable in a live boot session using a boot stick.

However, I think it fails to load KDE Plasma when I choose it as a desktop environment on the login screen. After logging in with Plasma(Wayland) set as an option, I still see the Kubuntu desktop, not Plasma. I'm not very experienced but I tell it from the Kubuntu startmenu icon which still shows up in the bottom left corner instead of the KDE Plasma icon.

Also the virtual keyboard doesn't work. When I click it in the login screen, nothing is showing. In the system setttings, there is only the option "none" to choose.

I currently still have Windows 11 installed, but I don't yet want to remove it, since I only want to keep this PC if I find a Linux OS which I can use it well with as a surface PC in tablet mode.

Do you have an idea what could be the problem here and how to fix it?

Outside of `xdg-settings`, `mimeapps.list` and `update-alternatives` where can a system be getting a value for default application?

My system is opening links in Brave browser even though it is not my default browser.

In Sublime Text if I right click on a link and choose the option to open that URL in a browser, Brave browser will open.

In the Java application DBeaver if I am prompted with a software update screen and click to view the details , the system redirects to Brave browser.

In Thunderbird if I click on a web link in an e-mail, it opens in Brave. Refining this functionality in Thunderbird yields an interesting clue. If I navigate to the Preferences section (Menu Edit > Settings scroll down to ‘Files & Attachments’ ) for opening applications `http` and `https` offer choices.

Where is Thunderbird getting the idea Brave is the default browser? Everything else in my system is pointing towards Thorium.

In Brave settings, setting Brave as the default is unchecked. Any *.desktop shortcuts for Brave on the system have the `--no-default-browser-check` flag on the command line syntax.

In `~/.config/mimeapps.list` any values with `thorium-browser.desktop` are closer to the top than `com.brave.Browser.desktop` or `brave-browser.desktop`.

In `update-alternatives` these are the outputs for `gnome-www-browser`, `www-browser` or `x-www-browser`:

Code:

Hi!

This is a pretty new Kubuntu 25.10 installation (about 2 weeks?) on a Framework 12 laptop.

Spectacle is not launching, either using Plasma or by command line.

Launching through Plasma, I receive this notification about a minute after the launch:
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

Launching through command line:

libavutil59/questing-updates,questing-security,now 7:7.1.1-1ubuntu4.2 amd64 [installé, automatique]

The only thing related I found on internet was a post on an opensuse forum which solved the issue by reinstalling the OS.

I tried reinstalling kde-spectacle and libavutil59 without success.
I'm not sure what would be the next thing to try.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I use Dolphin service menus to extract subtitles from video files. Then, if the subtitle is ssa format, I use a second service menu to convert it to srt. Independently, they both work fine. I'd like to combine this into a single service menu; i.e extract and convert automatically when the file type is ssa.

The subtitle extraction is done with a python script that I call from the service menu like this:

Code:

Exec=$HOME/.local/share/applications/mkvextract-allsubs-eng %u

The conversion to srt is much simpler and uses ffmpeg, so it's a one-liner:

Code:

ffmpeg -i "$fn" "${fn%.*}".srt

I suspect I could add the conversion function to the python script, but I don't know python at all - the python script is something I found on the 'net.

I have attempted this in the service menu:

Code:

Exec=$HOME/.local/share/applications/mkvextract-allsubs-eng %u; fn=%u; if [[ "${fn#"${fn%???}"}" = "ssa" ]]; then ffmpeg -i "$fn" "${fn%.*}".srt; rm "$fn"; fi

The results are the extraction occurs but not the conversion.

All the pieces in the if statement work from the command line so I think the issue is in the Service Menu action itself - like once the python script is called the service menu stops provessing.

Looking for ideas..

So I have had a great experience with gaming on Ubuntu/Kubuntu so far, the one or two extra set up steps I need for certain games was worth the significant quality of life improvement compared to Windows. However, I have learned that my VR headset, the Vive Cosmos does not have native drivers, and there is no clean, well-documented approach to third-party setup.
I tried several methods and found no luck, because they simply weren't built for running on Linux.
So I want to set up a dual boot for Windows 10, so I can run my VR games natively and any other software I want/need to use that simply doesn't have any safe or reliable workaround for running on Kubuntu.
Problem is, all the dual booting guides I find are about going from a Windows 10 set up to a Linux/Windows dual-boot, where as I need help with the opposite approach: A clean install of Kubuntu to a Kubuntu - Windows 10 Dual Boot.
What is the recommended way of setting up a Windows 10 dual-boot partition from Kubuntu?

I have already made a Windows 10 installation USB via Ventoy, what I need help with now is what are the appropriate steps of preparing for installing that disk image.

Edit: For future reference I should clarify: I have four hard drives installed in my build, 3 of them are solid states, so I have options for where to install the Windows 10 OS

Hi,
I've had several USB pen drives suddenly stop working, failing to mount, resulting in an error. Even with the repair tool, they don't work again. However, when I insert them into a Windows 10 or 11 system, the repair tool starts working again, even in Kubuntu.
What causes these USB pen drives to crash in Kubuntu?
If it's a bug, when will it be fixed?
I'm using Kubuntu 25.10.

I thought I had an SSD over-heating issue - added heat sink - and that helped.

However - I just tried optimizing a video file on plex (which is running on this box) - and the system crashed immediately - no time for anything to heat up.

I guess it could be something to do with Plex causing an issue - but this really feels like some t ype of hardware issue.
