What are you typing, i can tell with sound

Li Zhuang, Feng Zhou, and Doug Tygar have an interesting new paper showing that if you have an audio recording of somebody typing on an ordinary computer keyboard for fifteen minutes or so, you can figure out everything they typed. The idea is that different keys tend to make slightly different sounds, and although you don't know in advance which keys make which sounds, you can use machine learning to figure that out, assuming that the person is mostly typing English text. (Presumably it would work for other languages too.)

This is the Pdf file about it

Or check the new in this page

thats incredible. I think there could be some relation to the touch tone phone, but in a different sense. This could have some serious affects on security. Talk about a key logger, how about a sound logger.

Ah, that's pretty cool and makes sense, I suppose. I guess it's like the triangulation of radio signals in that sense. Suppose you could stick your head in a stream of RJ-45 and stare at patterns of bits passing through your skull. I would imagine given sufficient time you could make the same parallel bit to ASCII to language translations. It's just having a sufficient sample set to extrapolate the gaps.

However, with that said, I don't use a keyboard at all. No. In fact, I'm not even typing this. My trained pet monkey, Mojo, sits at the helm 24/7 typing random garbdley gook which is parsed through my AI python script '/usr/bin/monkey2man.py' and fed to a FF window. I just sit back on the bed, pack in some more worm dirt, throw him a banana, and admire it all from afar. So, unless you speak the monkey language of "ooh ooh", a mike next to my keyboard does little good...
