Can't get past KDE welcome screen! Urgent!

Hi, i am rather new to linux and have installed Kubuntu all right. Yesterday after installing both java j2r1.5 (tested ok with firefox) and realplayer (via synaptic) Firefox was behaving oddly (couldn't start up).
Did a reboot but now I can't get past the KDE-welcome screen. When I log in the screen first becomes black, then gray and then the welcome screen is up again. Did memorytest (OK), failsave mode doesn't help either...
    What can I do?

    Error Messages

Are there any error messages when you try to log in. When you type your password and try to login does it freeze or just not do anything?

      No, none whatsoever.
It just goes black, then grey (with watch) as if starting kubuntu and back I am at the KDE welcome screen... :?:

Press Ctrl-Alt-F1: you'll get to the console. Then type:
        Code:
        dmesg > mydmesg.txt
A file named mydmesg.txt will be created in /home/username. Post this file.
        Also post /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Well, took me some time. The mydmesg.txt file is empty (don't know why) but here comes at least the Xorg.0.log file. Not exactly what I would call for bedtime reading. See for yourself:
          Good luck, Gabor

Really strange, there's no error, just some (normal) warning.
            Could you post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
Anyway, the dmesg would be really useful...really strange you can't get it.

Any idea now? If not I will probably have to reinstall kubuntu...
              Keeping my fingers crossed!

Can't get past KDE welcome screen! Urgent!

                There's no error nor warning...
When you get the blank screen press Ctrl-Alt-F1 and then post the Xorg.0.log. There should be at least an error I guess.

Can't get past KDE welcome screen! Urgent!

Looks like there isn't any easy solution, the Xorg.0.log file looks pretty much the same again (a few drm-errors same as before), but I haven't compared the files line for line so here it comes one last time...
If there is no solution then I will have to reinstall, the system hasn't worked for over a week now, using windows instead...

Is there a way to restore your computer to an earlier time?

I know this isn't helpful, but I thought I would mention that a similar thing happened to me when I was using SuSe. But it gave me an error message, and I was able to edit a file to fix it. Does anyone know if there is a restore function like in Windows?

                        5.10

You can download 5.10 now. Its out. In fact you can get to the download site if you go to the main page of kubuntuforums.net and click on the download link in the sidebar on the left.

I was just wondering if the reason for the whole problem could be too small a root partition. Mine has 2 GB and the problem happend after installing realplayer and java.
Could 2GB be for little and if yes what is the recommended minimumsize of the root partition?
