    Going from Fedora -> Kubuntu

    I have been using linux for over 5 years and have always stayed with the Redhat flavor of distros.

    Why the change? Dunno. Bored I guess. Plus I am still on FC core 3 and I figured it was time to upgrade. Backed up my config files and other goodies. After the download finishes, burn the cd, then cut loose.

    Actually in a nut shell Redhat, Fedora IMHO is getting too bloated. 4 discs is quite a bit just for a desktop. I like KDE and plan on sticking with it. Just don't want all of this extra crap I never use ;-). Granted I could be more selective in the Fedora install but too lazy just to pick certain packages.

    Anyways my system that I am installing the kubuntu on is hp zd7000 laptop. Don't know if any one has tried installing kubuntu on a similar system but since I previously have everything working except the modem and card reader it shouldn't that challeging.

    Overall, keep up the good work and basically just wanted to say hi.

    You could try booting from a Live disc of Kubuntu.

      Going from Fedora -> Kubuntu

      Well, I have Kubuntu installed. Let you know that I am very impressed. Exactly what I was looking for. Small, but also powerfull enough to allow me to install my own software.

      First off I was very impressed that Kubuntu configured the sound and graphics card out of the box. Only issue is have not been able to get 3d rendering with my nvidia card. But I will test that later.

      Another thing took it me a little bit of time getting used to the way kubuntu installs applications. Coming from the rpm world takes a little getting used too.

      Finally got ndiswrapper working for the wireless card. Thank God for forums.

      Basically everything that worked with FC 3 works with kubuntu. Just need to do some minor configuration.

      Left to do:
      3d acceleration
      apache + php + mssql drivers
      Install my other apps

      Kudos to this creators of this distro.

        Update, got the 3d acceleration to work with my 1400x900 resolution. ;-)

        Thanks for all the How To's regarding Kdevelop and Mono made my task real easy in installing my editors of choice for development.

        One thing I noticed my screen saver is not working. Is that a bug or something I need to work out?

        So they only left for me to do that I see as a need is setup Apache and PHP so that it can access my local mssql server for development. Then believe it or not I am through.

        Migration seemless -> no. A lot of fun -> yes.

          Update screen saver is working now. I guess I wasn't waiting long enough.
