if they have to pass some kind of inspection, that might be nice because all the generic controllers that I have ever bought fail to work with at least one of my games.

First of all, M$ can do what they wish with the hardware they release into the market. However, no one really could be surprised. No one could be surprised that M$ will try to milk as much financial capital from other companies. After all, market trends tend to move everything from the PC to appliances. Phones, PDA's, Consoles, Laptops (almost PC) but still an appliance, Ipods, ebooks...

I doubt Sony will do the same. If M$ really follows through with this, Sony may see far many more 3rd party hardware investment that provides more choice and competitive pricing for their game system (Remember Sony's playstation whooped the xbox in almost every facet in the market). If there is far more equipment available, it may be enough to drive the market to buy more Sony stations.

M$ may be at a slight advantage by releasing their new box before sony has, but I have a hunch many old time playstation owners will stay loyal to the next gen boxes. After all, they guarantee backwards compatibility with the older games, whereas M$ has released a limited list of games that 'may' play with the new system. What a joke.

If I were Sony, I'd open my arms to 3rd part hardware makers who want to jump on the bandwagon. I'd also lower royalty fees to give gaming companies further incentive to write playstation only games. Meanwhile, M$ would wonder why the hell they are again losing money on their console side and discontinue it. How much money did they lose on the first xbox? $4 billion was it?

I'm sure that when people get Linux running on Xbox2, just about any controller will work...

it might be a good idea to leak out problem 3rd party stuff, but on the other hand may cause companys too look elsewhere....
i dont think it will be a big problem, and will just hopefully give us a product that we know 'should' work..
