Missing main menu bar in gnome applications since upgrade to Kubuntu 12.04

Audacity is missing the main menu bar since I upgraded to Kubuntu 12.04.
No File menu, nothing, just all the graphical controls.
I'm guessing this is some sort of gnome compatibility issue as gnome3 has made a lot of changes.
I found one solution for gnome users here
Any idea how to fix in kde?

EDIT: Weird, if I launch a new window in Audacity (Cntrl+N) I get menus in the new window (but not in the first one).

I am getting the same with KDE3.9. Googled around but all I found was gnome-globalmenu stuff.

Just try this for me and see if something appears. Unlock widgets > add a widget called "Window Menubar" to your panel. Open an application. Make sure it is selected. Do you see anything? If yes then you can delete it and look for either a setting in the application or check if its a weird gnome design choice. If no, then you probably have an issue that needs troubleshooting.
