    xserver-xorg problem GIVING UP NEW QUESTION

    how do I remove X and reinstall from scratch- hacking it just isn't doing anything

    804/359
    changed vid card from ati rage128pro to ati radeonhd2600pro
    it found new card, adepted ati driver, reboot and no joy- I only get white screen after login splash

    tried recovery mode start, xfix option gives me
    xserver-xorg postinst warning: overwriting possibly-customised configuration
    file; backup in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.2008050722470

    <dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg> walks through configuration until 3-button emulation, then gives same error

    <modify>
    just tried startx from root, gives me a little dialogue box "could not start kstartupconfig, Check your installation"
    </modify>

    what do I do now?

    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

    xorg.conf is a system file -- Super User privilege is required to modify it.

    I'm root in recovery mode
    digging around forum a bit, found someone else with ati issues, tried some of what they suggested:

    apt-get installo xorg-driver-fgtlrx
    returns "already newest version"

    aticonfig --initial
    returns "data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf Device section "Configured Video Device" must have a Driver line"

    my xorg.conf has no driver line for Device or Monitor sections. Perhaps this is the problem? But I have no idea what to put there

    trying it again, postinst warning now includes "FATAL: Module battery not found"
