Now since this has little to do with Kubuntu I guess I will place this here.
You see lately my BIOS screen has a tendency to flicker as if it has an issue with the vertical hold or something, or not appear and my screen will flash "Not support!" while on a blue screen (though not the blue screen of death as my system still boots)
I am not to sure if my BIOS is failing or something and its got me worried that something is wrong with my MOBO or something, though dont know how this computer is barely a year old.
Your thoughts?

Oh I may add: No I did not change the graphics card, its the same in built one that came with my mobo.
This computer is one I made myself, I got specs at the ready if you need em.

Hello friends,
I am new to kubuntu and am using precise pangolin... I have a small problem in that I cannot find the system languages option in the country/Region & Language tab of system settings. So, everytime I have to install a language, I have to do it in gnome and come back. Can anyone offer me a solution to this problem?

Also when I choose the keyboard input option to another language, I still can only type in english in kubuntu whereas I can type in any language that I prefer in gnome or unity.. Please help me fix this..

Further, in system settings ---> keyboard layout, there is no language support for Tamil language in kubuntu, but it is there in normal gnome based version..

Thanks in advance for your reply,

Thanks again

Hi - I've been wrestling with this for days and have cracked it right up to the bit where I cannot get the script file(?) - pogoplugfs - to auto run when I boot up/ login. I have to type the following into the terminal every time I want to connect:

./pogoplugfs --user (my_email) --password (my_password) --mountpoint /media/pogoplug

Once I do this I get my files in /media/pogoplug just as I want them

I have tried to set it to autorun in 'start-up' but I'm not at all sure of what I am doing there - is it a program?, is it a script? - either way I'm not sure what to complete. I'm not great with terminals but can do it if assisted, if thats the best way.
any assistance apreciated

Hello guys

This is not KDE related but system related, and i'm hoping that someone can shed a light on me.

When a user login remotely via ssh -X or with Freenx, X2go, this user will have all sort of problems with permissions to access DBUS.
KDE Crashes with several attempts to establish a connection to DBUS, even the printer-applet doesn't work.

I've been messing with dbus and changing files like /etc/dbus-1/system.d/com.redhat.NewPrinterNotification.conf and changing deny's to allow and got printer-applet to work.
I've done the same to oher files, but this method it seems to be clumbesome and destined to fail after a dbus update.

Does any of you guys know of any other smarter way to manage this? Isn't any group that will allow a remote user on a random display to have the same permissions as a local logged user?

Example of log output errors.
May 15 15:21:01 Code5-i386 console-kit-daemon[11015]: WARNING: Could not acquire name; bailing out
May 15 15:21:01 Code5-i386 dbus[9178]: [system] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1' (using servicehelper)
Many thanks for any help that anyone can provide.

basically I can't figure out how to make them accessible to kmail (like when you start typing in the kmail address field, it suggests contacts from your addressbook).
From the "Sytem Settings" panel I go to "Personal Information" > "Kde Resources" and add my akonadi address books to the kde resources,
a standard resource cannot be read only.

I downloaded and installed 12.04 Precise a couple of weeks ago and installed Mozzila Firefox, but had not browsed PBS online until last night. I always like to keep up with a couple of shows they run, but can't always be sitting in front of the TV when they are scheduled. I never had problems watching these shows on my version of 11.10 Oneric. However, when I tried it out, the videos wouldn't play. I checked out their site to find out what flash player I needed and they said I needed the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. All other sites needing Flash Player I have no problem with, YouTube, DailyMotion, ect. I went to Adobe's site and downloaded the latest linux version (version 11) in a tar.gz format. After extracting, the read me file says I have to copy files to the browser plugins file, but can't seem to find that particular file. I've looked in the root/usr/share/kubuntu-firefox-install files but was unable to find plugins there. I ran a "locate firefox" command in the CLI and got a lot of entries but no plugins entries. Does anyone know into which file firefox stores it's plugins? Or does anyone know what I need to install this file? I know there has been some issues between Adobe and Linux lately, can this be part of the problem?

Looking at ways to help gain new users fo linuxr distributions, many people often ask for different defaults - like a switch in settings, package...

Looking at ways to help gain new users fo linuxr distributions, many people often ask for different defaults - like a switch in settings, package managers, bases, wallpapers, and of course in the notorious web browser. While everyone can fight over what would fit best, I do believe that the distribution creators, whatever they may be, must take full responsibility over the defaults they may put in their iso image. That is, if a creators put in "ren'py" into their distro, they should take full responsibility of the reactions users will have - and have no regrets over it. A newcomer looking at the defaults can tell that person a lot about what a distro represents, and what type of user it is intended to appeal to. If something does not work in the defaults, it gives a bad impression to users, making them think of the whole distro as pushing buggy software at them

However, I notice there's one thing in Kubuntu that's disturbing: Although it has some decent defaults, there are "installers" everywhere that are outside the package manager and the add-on installer in kde: for defualt screensavers, flash players, codecs for k3b, firefox, and default wallpapers. Somehow, I think they leave a poor sense of accountability in Kubuntu. They speak of the developers of Kubuntu having regrets about it's defaults, almost saying to the user that "we wanted to include these things, but we couldn't because of 'this' " It displays that our distro alone has little control over itself, that you can't force accountability into it for some reason. This just doesn't seem right.

K3b doesn't have a specific codec by default. The developers should have full responsibility and no regrets in this - they follow patent laws ethically.

There's only one wallpaper. If creators of Kubuntu truly believe in this for an idealized default, they should have no regrets to just let people put in wallpapers of their own, and leave no installer of wallpapers they might have wanted in the iso.

Flash isn't included. You don't need to regret not having it by implementing a notifying installer in the defaults. Some people don't like flash...

No screensavers. If this this is how the defaults intended to do full responsibilty should be to the developers to the reasons why there isn't any screensavers. (I like screensavers!)

If by all means that rekonq must be the true, default web browser, there should be full responsibility over whatever complaints that users have towards the web browser, and just adding a firefox installer should not be a way to scapegoat from this responsibility.

Let's not have any more regrets about the defaults, and do away with these "outside installers." after all, as a lot of pundits say about Ubuntu: Like it or not, they move towards a direction without regrets in their decisions, in face of many doubters. I think these installers tell users that Kubuntu itself it a doubter of it's defaults, which I hope is not the case...
