If you want the latest JRE from sun do this:

Go to : http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Click on the download link that says: Linux (self-extracting file)* *Note:not* the one above it that says rpm

Click on the instructions that go with it. Make sure you follow the .bin instructions not the rpm intructions!

Follow the instructions...hook up the plug in...then test if you installed it correctly by going to the same link as above and click the verify installation button.

Tadow... your done. If their instructions are unclear to you let me know and I'll break it down.

I'm having problems with this as well, as a convert from Win XP and having no idea about terminal commands, could someone in words so simple please tell me how to get Java on my system.

It may be starnge but as a big web user (Firefox) this is one thing that may send me to Linspire as thta sems to work with Java on the live cd trail.

Well I've eevn astounded myself ;D

Read elswhere in the forums how to get Adept to point to older repositoried, did that, downloaded and installed Java, and now Firefox is up and running it.

Now for Realplayer

I loaded realplayer10GOLD just by following the directions on the site. Works okay. Java, on the other hand, I've had no luck. I pulled the pound signs from the host list, and still no luck from apt-get.

Just for information :
I tried to install Java from the official website, following their instruction.

I used the file java*.bin

After having run the command ./java*.bin, they say that you must create a symbolic link in the mozilla directory, if you use mozilla firefox it may not work, because you must create the symbolic link in the mozilla-firefox directory... I know it is a bit evident but not for a noob :)
I don't know if this will help...
