I am not sure when it happened as there have been a number of updates recently but Google Earth no longer works, has anybody else had this problem?

I got this output from the crash log /root/.googleearth/crashlogs/crashlog-4ea9de6f.txt.

No, I have not had any problems and it still works for me. I am probably not having any trouble because I installed the package google-earth-stable_current_amd64.deb which I downloaded from the site: http://www.google.com/earth/download/ge/agree.html. Because of this approach, google earth does not show as an installed package in either muon or synaptic.

When I have trouble with Google Earth, I rename the .googleearth directory in my home directory and then restart Google Earth. When Google Earth crashes, it often leaves a instance-running-lock file. Removing this may be and alternative approach to try.

Sorry to hear that it is still not working. The only other option that I can think of at the moment, is that Google Earth requires 3D desktop. On my system I have System Settings>Desktop Effects>General with "Enable desktop effects at startup" enabled. Have you updated recently and do you have proposed updates enabled? I think it has something to do with Xlib as I get this error when I run it from terminal.

Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0".

I do daily updates and the settings I have are in the first graphic. When I use Synaptic with Xlib in the quick filter I get what is shown in the second graphic.

Another possibility is that you may not have the correct video drivers. Have you tried System>Additional Drivers to see if there are drivers to be installed for your video card?

Just download it from Google.com. That version seems to work. I am using the 64bit version.

mine is still working ...although with some strange looking font ...ver. 6.0.3.2197-r0 on a 11.04 install net upgraded to 11.10
3.0.0-12-generic KDE-4.7.2 fully updated as of today with dist-upgrade.

Yes it's weird, I have another partition with 11.04 32-bit and there Google Earth works fine.
I've even copied the /opt directory tree to this 11.10 64-bit and get the same error.
So there must be some library that's not found in the expected path.
And it worked untill 1 or 2 weeks ago...

Thanks for letting me know about the new version. I removed the one I had and downloaded the latest. I installed it simply by clicking on the deb package and letting the installer do the work rather than use apt-get. This new version (6.1.0.5001) is also working for me and the listing of the files in the directory are shown in the graphic.

For those who are having trouble with Google Earth, I am wondering what the output is when the console is used to launch it by entering

I checked my system and found google-earth in /usr/bin and it points to googleearth in /opt/google/earth/free as shown in the graphic below. I hope you can resolve what is happening on your system.

will tell you the path


ls -la /usr/bin/google-earth

will tell you where the symlink points (this assume the first command gave you /usr/bin/). My google-earth actually points to /opt/google/earth/free/googleearth. There is also a googleearth-bin marked as executable in this same directory.



locate googleearth-bin

Will tell you where googleearth-bin is (note, you may need to use this command first):


sudo updatedb

What I think is of more relevance is the Launcher Menu command used to start Google Earth. This is shown below in the graphic. As you can see, it is starting the google-earth shell script in the /opt/google/earth/free directory. I am wondering if your Launcher Menu is using the same command to start Google Earth.

Vinny, thanks for the effort of checking this list.

I've put the one I posted next to those of three other installs that work and on my computers there is no difference.
Except that one doesn't and the others do work...

So it seems the extra files you have are not necessary for a running Google-earth.

mine is still working ...although with some strange looking font ...ver. 6.0.3.2197-r0 on a 11.04 install net upgraded to 11.10
3.0.0-12-generic KDE-4.7.2 fully updated as of today with dist-upgrade.

I had the fonts issue. They were huge! There's a very neat fix for it here which fixed the problem for me:

I tried to install the googleearth.deb on tonight’s fresh install and it would not run.

I uninstalled, installed the installer from the repositories through Muon and it still wouldn't run.
Then I uninstalled the version from the repositories and installed the googleearth.deb.

Google earth now works... ???

Oh yes, this trick does not work on the original install.
