Sound lost in upgrade from Breezy to Dapper

I just upgraded from Breezy (original version installed) to Dapper Drake using Adept (I normally use Synaptic, but tried Adept after Synaptic looked like it was going to uninstall a few applications for no apparent reason). Anyways, the upgrade went mostly okay except that sound isn't working at all. Tried amaroK, XMMS, and KDE system sounds. I've made sure that all the hardware is plugged in correctly, all dials in KMix and alsamixergui are unmuted.

I don't know if you realize it or not, but Adept uninstalled the same things that Synaptic would have uninstalled. IT JUST DID'NT TELL YOU. That's one of the problems of using Adept.

The question is, what do I do with this info? It all looks basically like what it should. I'd try playing with alsaconf, except that K/Ubuntu doesn't include it.

I'm willing to try some different options. Can I reconfigure ALSA using dpkg?Install a newkernel image (for Athlon instead of 386)? I'd rather not do a clean reinstall except as a last resort, but I might be willing if nothing else works AND if someone with a similar problem has actually had success going this route where an upgrade has failed.

Ha ha, problem solved!

I played around a bit more with alsamixer. I had previously tried unmuting everything. Well it turns out that I got sound working by MUTING Line Jack Sense, which must have been muted to start with.

I guess the lesson is that when alsamixer runs, it's configured right, you just have to twiddle sliders until you hear something.

I'm glad you got it going by fooling around with alsamixer. I must admit when that when you posted an initial message that indicated that you were an experienced user, I hesitated to suggest that under the assumption that you'd already muted, and unmuted everything and slid every slider in every combination before posting. Unfortunately, though that doesn't work every time. I once lost my sound for at least two kernel upgrades. (That was under Debian, not Kubuntu).

Hello i have the same problem .. upgraded to dapper and no sound any more ..

lspci returns:

PS: I can't play around with alsa mixer cause if i type "alsamixer" to my console it tells me something like there is no sound card. ?!?

I did not upgrade from Breezy, but just stayed with Dapper. I don't know if it cames after an upgrade, but since a few days I loose sound.
I played with some switches on alsamixer, but no results.

Well the interesting things is, when I loose sound, I tried everything, and without any kind of error from anywhere did not had any idea of where to look for. So I restart with Windows XP, and the sound where also lost. I recovered it only by switching off the computer and restarting windows ???.

As stated above, the first thing to try is to use kmix and/or alsamixer to diable/re-enable everything and slide all sliders all the way down and all the way up. Testing sound with K>SystemSettings>Sound&Multimedia>Test Sound at each change. I know it's tedious, but not having any sound is worse. Then, go to the second tab on Sound & Multimedia and change the "Select Audio Device" from "Autodetect" to Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (just in case it was autodetecting something else). Then, if none of these things work, reboot your computer.

In other words, sound can fail for a dozen different reasons and getting back is often a hit or miss proposition.

@Denis: Your lsmod output looks like mine, (which doesn't mean that your not missing something).

@wudu: Where did you get alsaconf? It's not included in Dapper.

Well I did all this things already, and no changes.
I tried also to run older kernels, because, until know everything worked fine, but, what ever the kernel or safe mode I try, the results is a total silent world.

However I noticed that during the boot, the device might be set on because I can here from my speakers a small smoothy "pop" like it does when you switch on an amplifier and listen the speaker... if you see what I mean.

The clue is that I cannot find any kind of fail or error message from anywhere. Thus, I have now idea of what to do. And I have now idea of what I did before the problem occur.

I have NEVER seen an error message when my sound went out, except for popups saying that the sound driver wasn't available and the system was switching to no sound.

The next thing to check is to make sure that your user is a member of the audio group. You can do this in two ways, either use konqueror to look at the file /etc/group, look for the group "audio", it's number 29 on my system and make sure your user is a member. The other method is the thing that you'd use to add your user to the audio group. K>System Settings>Users & Groups>Groups>show systems groups>Administrator Mode and add youself to the audio group, if neccesary. Of course it's also possible to do this by editing the group file with "sudo nano" or "kdesu kate".

Is it possible that, palying with the hostname of my computer, or changing from a dhcpd to fixed IP and domain may lead loose the sound by one or an other way?

Wudu: Thanks for the link. If it had worked for you under Dapper, that would imply that the libraries that it depends on are similar enough to the versions in Dapper that it's usable. As it is, it's impossible to tell why it fails to detect your sound card. Can you try a different sound driver besides ALSA?

Denis: Almost anything is possible, but I don't think that either changing the hostname or changing network settings can kill your sound.
