Instead of showing the global identity's nickname in chat windows, Kopete 1.0.8 shows the full screen name/address of the active account. That is, instead of:

* John:
lorem ipsum...
Kopete shows:
===========
* johnnes_bismark_smithington_the_third@jabber.org:
lorem ipsum...
There does not seem to me to be anyway to change this in Kopete's configuration options; the desired fix would have Kopete show nicknames, rather than addresses in chat windows. Although hardly crucial, it's enough of an annoyance for me to consider switching clients.
