new install now no networks??

hi i am new to kubuntu and have been a windows man for donkeys years, so have installed this version 10.10 on a dell d600 and in the sys tray is a red cross no network interfaces and wired and wireless are ticked and enabled?, when i go to network area everything is greyed out except vpn and there is no info like adapaters etc.
how do i sort this out??

No, please don't post more than one thread, it could be confusing to others. I've looked through your other thread and even though you are having quite a time with it, hang in there. :)

Should you be unable to get it working with the help you receive on this forum, perhaps there is a Linux User's Group in your area that might be able to lend a hand?
