[RESOLVED] How to install proprietary graphics drivers

Hello everyone

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I haven't been able to find any instructions regarding this matter anywhere.

Basically, I would like to install the proprietary drivers for my Radeon 9550 but I haven't managed to find any instructions concerning this matter for Lucid Lynx. I can only find instructions for Karmic Kanola, which don't seem to work for Lynx.

In the end, I downloaded the relevant drivers from AMD's website and I ended up with a .run file which I don't know what to do with. Clicking on it opens it in Kate.

Basically, I can't figure out how to proceed so any help will be greatly appreciated. And one more thing, I have never used Kubuntu before today so keep that in mind when you make a reply.

The first thing to do with a new version of any Linux, is to read the release notes:

I'm not an ATI user, but I don't suppose your Radeon 9550 has the problem listed in the note on "older ATI graphics cards". So, if it looks like you're OK on that, then the next thing that I would advise is to check the Ubuntu forum. Go to "Hardware and Laptops" and "Search This Thread" with "radeon 9550" and you find threads like these:

p.s. I would not assume that the installation procedure for 9.10 would not work correctly for 10.04.

You have to become root in the terminal:

sudo su -
Then follow the instructions, ensuring that you identify your downloaded .run file.

Wow -- that's a pretty nice little guide. One would almost think it safe to buy an ATI graphics card for a Linux box ... :-X

Thanks for the help guys. However, I found out after I made this post that that a graphics card I had lying around, the Geforce 6200, has almost twice the power of the Radeon 9550 so I swapped the two around and I now have the 6200 in this PC.

After that, installing proprietary drivers for the 6200 was as simple as opening Hardware Drivers, selecting the correct driver package and activating. Strangely, doing this with the 9550 installed had no options available. Go figure! Why my brother bought that 9550, I'll never figure out.

So my graphics problems are now sorted out (by using an Nvidia card instead though). Again, thank you for the help.
