[Solved]
If you have a dual DVI ATI card and the live cd boots to a blank screen, switch the monitor plug to the other DVI socket.
If you have Grub2 problems, continue reading...

There is something seriously wrong with 10.04. If you have a recent ATI graphics card you are in trouble.

A clean install from a live CD fails because the Live CD dies to a black screen.
Upgrading with the update manager proceeds through the upgrade but results in a broken Grub2 install.

The Grub2 rescue mode doesn't recognize the linux command needed to point to the installed kernel.

You can reinstall Grub2...if the live cd works. But it doesn't.

Enter Super Grub Disk http://www.supergrubdisk.org/index.php?pid=5
Their cd download page gives you this inspiring message: "If you are a newbie please check for Cdrom, Usb or floppy download instead of SG2D Cdrom, SG2D Usb and SG2D floppy on mirror #0. This is the old Super Grub Disk which actually works better than the new Super Grub Disk based on Grub2. Sorry for any troubles that you run into."

I'm downloading SG2D Cdrom 1.30, hopefully that will fix the broken grub install.

NO luck with Super Grub Disk. Does anyone else have any ideas?

Found my 9.10 live cd. Booted that and reinstalled grub2.

Rebooted still with grub errors.

Found grub2 help here and made progress: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=211383

Still boot to a black screen...probably ATI driver problems now. I'm tired.

Still have to configure grub every time I reboot...fixing that is the next step.

The black screen boot was due to the monitor cable being plugged into the wrong socket on my dual dvi card.

Rebooted and realised that the 10.04 live cd might now work. It did!

Visited https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling%20GRUB%202 and reconfigured grub2 with method 3.
