Hi folks. I've come to Kubuntu from OS X, but I'm having trouble finding a replacement for one program that I used to use, and I'm hoping that you folks can point me in the right direction.

What I'm looking for is a version of GeekTool (http://projects.tynsoe.org/en/geektool/), which provides a 'live' desktop. What I'm looking for is the ability to monitor log files, as well as text files, and the output of CLI commads (like Remind).

My 'net searches only showed SuperKaramba as being similar, but that's more like OS X's Dashboard, which is waaaay more than my needs require, and I couldn't find a theme that actually does what I'm looking for.

Hopefully, someone here will have a suggestion for a GeekTool replacement for me. Thanks in advance.

I don't know whether this does what you want, but take a look at K>Sytem>KSystemLog.

No, that's not what I'm looking for. What GeekTool on the Mac does is 'embed' the output of CLI commands (say tail -10 /var/log/some-log-file, or cat reminders.txt) into the actual desktop, and udpates them at a user definable interval.

Offhand, I can't think of any Linux utility that will do that. That doesn't mean it isn't there.

Maybe find a SuperKuramba theme that can cat files?
