The "Canary in the mine" I have been using to test my 64bit Kubuntu Karmic with the GM45 Intel video chip installation are three graphic apps:

SecondLife
PenumbraCollection's "Blackplague", 'Overture" and "requiem"
Stellarium

SecondLife now runs without showing a bunch of garbage on the screen. To get that I had to increase the texture memory to over 300MB and, most importantly, turn OFF the hardware VBO setting! Now, I get the most gorgeous graphics SecondLife has shown me running either Windows or Linux. (When it quits it leaves behind a msg about running SL on a 64bit installation and mentions several ia32 libraries, one of which is ia32-libs-kde, which is NOT in our repository. ??? But, regardless, my long quest to run SL on my 64 bit notebook is complete. I should aslo add that turning off the VBO has given me a higher fps, too.

The PenumbraCollection was totally unusable before yesterday's update. Now, except for the occasional flicker of an artifact here or there, it is also very acceptable, and very fast.

Stellarium behaves as usual. I still get garbage when I display the F2 configuration screens, and the others as well. I originally configured it by transferring my 32bit config file over to my 64bit partitions, so that allowed me to just use the star field and navigation against my location.

Great Job, Kubuntu dev team!

I'm also still having trouble with Stellarium's menus using Intel graphics - a particular nuisance since I use Stellarium to guide my astronomy telescope. However, I have found I can deal with a lot by editing the config file in the ~/.stellarium directory.

I read this and it reminded me how mutch I used to play with Kstars in a slackwareish distro I used .....so I installed this Stellarium ..........and uther than runing 60%+CPU as reported by top it display's just fine?

all the config screens though dark ar renderd just fine.

Vinny,

I think there's something going on. On my relatively low-power laptop, Stellarium rests at only about 17% CPU and goes up to about 23-25% when I'm moving the display around. That's with integrated Intel graphics. Do you have a graphics card or something?

with kwin effects on Stellarium idols ....that is if I just leave it allone

at 30%-CPU at18-FPS

draging the feald of view around...63%-CPU at 32-FPS

turning the effects off gives

at idol 30%-CPU at 18-FPS

draging the feald of view around...75%-CPU at 41-FPS

looks high I know but the thing dose look good........just a little scarey hearing those fans speed up..............he he

of corse the fan's do that wile mencoader's runing wild to so.

On my 64bit Kubuntu I got between 20 and 60% running Stellarium (along with Konqueror and Konsole and Kmail.
When no navigation is taking place the FPS idles at 27 fps and when I roll the thumb wheel and zoom in the FPS rises to 50 FPS and the CPU jumps to 60%. When I stop it the FPS drops to 27 and the CPU drops to 20%. The other CPU idles along at less than 10%.

ya not to mutch diferent than what I'm geting as far as %-CPU goes ..you seam to get higher FPS though...not to diferent

you using htop.......I onley see 1 cpu line in top but 2 in htop......of corse I think this is just 1 core but being seen as 2 from the hiper threding?? ....E mabey I'll chek leter......

EDIT: BUT the F2 windows (and the rest) are fine.

Is your CPU a 3 Ghz ?

My old Gateway m675prr laptop had a 3 Ghz CPU, and so was 32 bit, but it had two threads built in so Grell and other CPU monitors often reported that I had two CPUs. It could NOT run a 64 bit CPU.

as you say
My old Gateway m675prr laptop had a 3 Ghz CPU, and so was 32 bit, is that to say that a 3Ghz CPU cant be 64bit ?

but I'm shure it's not 64bit becose thars no "lm" in the flags.

it is as you say hiper threded and it's enabeld in the BIOS to so that's probley that showing 2 core's

;D

Just to let you know, some people disable signatures on forums because there is a tendency for people to put annoying graphics that either take up a lot of bandwidth (not everyone has a nice broadband connection) or happen to take up a lot of screen space (not everyone has large screens with high resolution running on them).

While I can think of worse ways to use your signature, you can not depend on people being able to see it since it is a "feature" people can disable from their forum preferences.

Right, DK!

And then there are folks like me who, after using forums like this, ignore sigs and focus only on the msgs.

Besides, I am notorious for poor vision! ;D
