External HD problem

Hi all, sorry for my english I try to explain the problem more clearly that i can.

I have 2 external hd.
One is IDE and the other is SATA, and the SATA HD has some problem.
Sometimes it "auto-disconnect" itself... but that it's not a problem of kubuntu, it's an hardware problem of the SATA.
The true problem with kubuntu is that I was copying some huge file from the SATA to the IDE, and as usual the SATA auto-disconnect itself. I turn off and on the SATA, kubuntu shows that it is connected, I open the directory i was copying on IDE, i select some subdirectory and copy them to IDE again, but kubuntu show me an error that it's not possible to create directory "AAAA"... so i checked on IDE if there was a directory "AAAA" but there was no dir called "AAAA".
So i've tried with the next dir "BBB" but the same happens, and so on for the first 5 or 6 directories, instead the copy of the other directories works fine.

Now there are 2 things that i've noticed, the first is that the 5 or 6 directory that i can't copy sometimes have a grey icon and sometimes have the normal blue icon.
The second is that under windows xp i can see the directories "AAAA", "BBB" etc under IDE hd, but i can't delete them.

Are these external drives connected through the USB ports? If so, as far as Kubuntu is concerned, they are not "IDE" or "SATA", they are "USB". Among other things, that means the speed of file transfer is far slower than you would see with a SATA or IDE interface.

If you are running a 32-bit OS, I think there are some limits to the size of files and directories that the OS can handle.

Finally, you may have a permissions issue on the drive to which you want to write files --- the "cannot create" error sounds like that kind of problem.

yes i'm on 32-bit OS but the copy of these files is not a problem, because i've done it. I have copied these 5 or 6 directory into another subdir on IDE-USB HD.
i don't know if i have to have particular permissions, i'm the only user of kubuntu and the IDE-USB HD was formatted in NTFS 1hour before.

the problem was that SATA-USB HD disconnected in the meanwhile that i was copying those directories the first time.
windows shows these directories "AAAA" "BBB" ... on IDE-USB HD, but it can't remove them
kubuntu doesn't show these directories and when i try to create a directory with the same name of them, kubuntu shows me the same error explained here above.
