After spending most of yesterday getting to know kde4.1 and helped by rog here:
http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3094578.new;topicseen#new
I find that kubuntu now sports their own packages. ;D
Easy to install and very fast ;D
There are a few issues but it is a great big step forwards.
Please give your opinions and eventual solutions.
The party continues ;) :)

Good for you, Fintan and Rog, and thanks!
I have to reinstall my Kubuntu 8.04 sometime soon (long story, involves XFS filesystem and VMWare ...). I was thinking I will wait until KDE 4.1 is released in July. But, you are making me feel brave and adventuresome -- maybe this weekend! ;D

Hey dible, you can install HH kde3 und then install kde4 as before:
Excerpts from:
http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.1beta1.php
Instructions
The updated packages for Kubuntu 8.04 are located in the Kubuntu Member's KDE 4 Personal Package Archive (PPA) repositories. To update to this latest beta release of KDE 4.1, please complete the following:
1. Add:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu hardy main
to your /etc/apt/sources.list.
2. If you do not have kubuntu-kde4-desktop installed, simply type:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install kubuntu-kde4-desktop
and answer the questions.
Have fun and enjoy ;D

So when it says one can install KDE 4.1 alongside KDE 3...does that mean that I can download and install 4.1, then log out to the login screen, and under Sessions I will have the option of choosing which KDE I can run?
Or is it more (less) complex than that?
dibl
Jun 5th 2008, 06:05 PM
Yes, that's exactly how it works if you first install the regular Hardy Heron (which comes with KDE3.5) and then install KDE4. That's what I did, and I've used KDE4 exclusively since about March, and it has not been a problem.
However, please be aware that there have been quite a few folks who reported problems when they tried to "go back" after running KDE4 for some time. Apparently there is still a bit of interaction, even though the packages install themselves in separate filesystem locations. So it's not advisable to install KDE4 on a theory that if you're not happy with it you'll go back to KDE3.5 and all will be smooth sailing. It would better to set up a separate installation, or VM perhaps, to do that. :)

Nice! I'll have to give it a go when I get home from work...
Do you happen to know if it is more or less (or varies too much to say) "resource-intensive" (I suppose the term might be...)? I've heard tell that 4 is up to 40% less intensive than 3.5. I'm curious because the machine I'm tooling around with is older (700mHz P3, 256 MB RAM) that I ousted XP on in favor of speed, which Kubuntu has provided in spades. Prior to Kubuntu, I tried Fedora 9 with KDE 4 on it and found it to be sluggish and overall disappointing; even the GNOME that came with it was dissatisfying. With Kubuntu, I've been more than pleased at every turn, and (this might be from years of Windows-socialization) I'm accustomed to Upgrade=Slower.
Long story short (too late!), did you notice any decrease in performance with 4?

My hardware is so fast that it's hard to tell without actually measuring things. (Not bragging here, just fortunate, I guess -- 3.5GHz dual core CPU, 4GB of RAM, and fast Raptor drives). On the same hardware platform, on a different hard drive I have sidux with KDE 3.5.9 and compiz on that one, too. I honestly cannot see any difference in responsiveness or speed between the two KDE desktops. I would say you'll suffer more installing Firefox 3 than KDE 4. You might want to go with Konqueror or Iceweasel for your browser (or Opera, which I've never tried).

I have a 5 year old caveman machine with 1gig ram and P4 2.4 cpu.
With kde4.1 beta I notice a definite increase in speed on loading stuff like FF, TB, OpenOffice and a few others.
I wouldn't know how it stacks up with 256ram but there is one way to find out ;) ;)

Here are some of my impressions for the first day:
Loves:
-installing and / or getting new plasma themes from:
right click>configure desktop
It goes straight to kde-look.org ;D
-getting / installing new color schemes from:
systemsettings>apperarence>colors>add colors
It goes straight to kde-look.org ;D
- Horizontal resiting of the panel. Very sexy.
- Add panel to the top. Very neat if one could resize vertically
- Folder view plasmoid
- kate session plasmaoid
-toggling between kickoff and tradition kicker with a right click
-kmenu editor with a right click
Not finished yet:
- installing new plasmoids (kde) from file or internet does not work yet.
- installing mac dashboard widgets crashes desktop (for a moment).
- installing new kdm themes from systemsettings(kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/systemsettings)>advanced>logon manager>themes>install does not connect to site (yet)
Regression:
-some plasmoids are not available (at least not in kubuntu, they work on the debian version) due to libplasma upgrade.
-Vertical resizing of the panel was lost (should be back soon).
Hate:
-kdesudo!! Just does not want to work correctly.
One has to do the whole path. ie. kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/kate, konqueror, etc.
-"run command" does not remember command. Pain!
I stuck this on a knote (kde4) and put it on my desktop:
kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/kate
kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/konqueror
kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/dolphin
kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/systemsettings
having a lot of fun here ;D

I posted this also on everything else KDE4.1 beta; But I guess this is also my first impression. (sorry if I'm spamming)
AAAA! I just tried to install KDE4.1beta and while this was being done I decided to turn off compiz and get to know the plasma desktop effects better. Well I by trying some things I crashed the plasma and probably Kwin and couldn't access Yakuake where updating to KDE4.1 was taking place. I thought the best thing is to log out and back in and continue with installation thet didn't work. But it said to repair I have to write:
sudo apt-get -f install
I did that and then I logout and back in just to witness the fatal crash of plasma:

So for now I'm back at 3.5.9 and I did
sudo apt-get autoremove
Maybe now it will work...
If not any idea how to make it work re-install plasma or something else??
Thanks for help
EDIT: I delited .KDE4 folder and now it works... barely ;D Hopefully it will get better.
EDIT 2: It's getting late and the problems are just getting bigger. My plasma crashed again, but thankfully my yakuake works so I can access everything through it... I killed the plasma but when I want to restart this happens:
<unknown program name>(10182)/ checkComposite: Plasma has an argb visual 0x8062268 52428801
<unknown program name>(10182)/ checkComposite: Plasma can use COMPOSITE for effects on 0x805ad88
So don't know what to do.. I'll probably sleep this over I think it will be for the best.
EDIT 3: Well From time to time my KDE4.1 even works and its quite an leap from 4.0.4.
When I'm adding some widgets I also experience plasma error but it's fatal.
I decided to reinstall my Kubuntu, somewhere in the future, and then install KDE4.1 on it.
But I should learn now for my final exams and not be bothered by KDE4.1 ;D

Well good luck with your exams. ;)
The only easy thing I can think of is to login to your kde3.5.9 (HH?right) and purge the kubuntu-kde4-desktop.
You may have to do a:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get update
first. I don't know.
Reinstall it with:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install kubuntu-kde4-desktop
making sure your
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu hardy main
are active in the sources.list
Hope that helps :)
Edit: That should also teach you not to fool with too much stuff during upgrades / installs ;) ;) :D

Does anyone have the same problem that I've got with Adept being locked out and unable to update anything? How do I resolve this?

Jun 6th 2008, 09:17 PM
Hey tomp,
have a look at the post right above yours. It addresses the same basic problem.
Hope that helps.
More Impressions:
- no message effects from the taskbar
- After todays upgrade still can't get alt-F2 to work. You have to right click on the desktop and "run command".
As they have kicked alt-F1 for kmenu I am wondering if kubuntu or kde don't like the alt-Fxyz combo anymore ??? It works on kde3 / kde4 environments and on opensuse 11RC1 but apparently not with kubuntu kde4 pure.
- klipper disappeared from my systray, have to run it manually at every boot.
Extra:
For those who like to experiment and want to change the height of the panel.
This feature disappeared somewhere between alpha and beta.
Here goes:
open:
~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc
now edit all the containers that look something like this:
[Containments][2][Applets][10]
geometry=46,2,427,56
immutability=1
plugin=tasks
zvalue=0
to look like:
[Containments][2][Applets][10]
geometry=46,2,427,42 (42 is a good size unless you want it reaally smaaaall)
immutability=1
plugin=tasks
zvalue=0
then set the max and min size accordingly:
[Containments][2][Configuration]
maximumSize=1202,45
minimumSize=1202,40
Hope this helps you tweakers ;) :)
Note: You must do this in recovery mode or change to a different shell as you cannot edit this file correctly as user!!

I am finding Kwin's new effects quite nice, and smoother for me than compiz (athlon xp 2700, geforce fx5200 card) . I have just the right amount of bling without it being crazy with only a couple of adjustments (I love wobbly windows for some reason)
dolphin is still crashy, especially when I try to connect to a remote ftp folder. It seems to get a touch more stable with each update so far,
i am still kicking the tires so far, not at my keyboard as much as I would like :(

Yes, you can and it crashes plasma most of the time :P
Neat trick though when they get it cleaned up. Thats why I do it manually.
Kwin is definitely a big step forward. Especially on my 5year old machine with a ati 9250 card :)
Yeah dolphin is still not finished and I wonder when we will get actions>edit / open as root back.
So usefull :)
For more:

I am still wondering why some people have keyboard shortcuts (like alt+F2) and some don't (like me >:( )
They are listed but not activated. for some reson I cannot fathom. Yet.

I think that is just a matter of packaging, as the 'edit as root' is simply a servicemenu, and i did try a daily snapshot of 4.1 in a vm and dolphin didn't crash
Having Kontact-kde4 available is also nice as well, though I didn't play with that too much. My memories of Kontact for kde 3.0 when new (and lost emails) keep that in check :)

That is why I use TB with "keep mail on server" and configure kontact (kmail) the same way.
But it does look nice so far.
Any ideas on alt+F2?

nope, other than that Kickoff (the new menu thingy) may have a different shortcut setup. I wonder what happens if we tried using the 'classic' menu? Would the shortcuts work?

I tried to purge KDE 4 Desktop, in KDE 3.5.9, unfortunately it looks like that is screwed as it won't stay up long enough to run the commands. I managed to remove the PPA repository line from sources.list and KDE 4 is relatively stable albeit adept is still locked.

I agree with Claydoh, the Desktop Effects seemed to have ironed out quite a few issues and seemed to run very nicely. I think this will be a great alternative to those who don't want to bother with Compiz, although Compiz works rather well for me at the moment with KDE4.1.

I'll have to also say the the Desktop effects aren't perfect though. I just happened to notice that when I turn it on, Thunderbird is completely invisible. I know it is there by the way the mouse acts and the fact that I can fumble around and find a menu action and see the menu list, but no window. Odd. Turn off Desktop effects and it reappears.
Edit: GKRELLM does the same. If I close them and reopen all is OK. Weird.

Well I finished my exams and now I'm back at trying to repair my KDE 4.1.
First of all how do I purge my KDE4? I tried
sudo apt-get remove kubuntu-kde4-desktop
but it dosen't do anything when I "reinstall" it it's still all the same.
OT (yeah sorry for off topic):
I decided to make an clean install of HH, but I don't know which to use the remix version or KDE3.5 version.
But that's the smallest problem. It will not be hard to back up my documents, but I would some gow like to import my firefox bookmarks and passwords is that possible?
Also how could I make an special partition for my home folder if possible even before new installation.
Or at least while installing my kubuntu again.
To go back on topic:
Is KDE 4.1 stable enough to be the only DE on my OS? Probably not. I read about all the problems with Plasma, can I have KDE 4.0.5 and KDE4.1 on same OS?
Thanks for your help.

It will not be hard to back up my documents, but I would some gow like to import my firefox bookmarks and passwords is that possible?
Your FF settings are in/hoem/username/.mozilla so using your original /home/username in the new installation will give you all the settings.
Also how could I make an special partition for my home folder if possible even before new installation.
Or at least while installing my kubuntu again.
I always use gparted live before making a new installation on a machine so I can make a separate /home and /data partition.
Gparted live:
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php
Is KDE 4.1 stable enough to be the only DE on my OS? Probably not. I read about all the problems with Plasma, can I have KDE 4.0.5 and KDE4.1 on same OS?
KDE4.1 has a few quirks as you can read above.
I don't think you can install kde4.0.5 parallel to kde4.1. I think kde 4.1 will replace kde 4.0.5.
And kde 4.1 will use the same /home/username/.kde4 directory and they are not compatible between the two kde4's.
For HH 3.5 kde 4.1 will effectively remove and replace kde3.5.9.
So if you want to test both I would install both separately with a separate username on /home.
You can easily move / copy your configurations (FF, TB, Kontact, etc) to the new user after installation.
I hope this points you in the right direction.

I installed (from scratch) Kubuntu 8.04 and KDE 4.1 Beta last weekend. After mucking around for a few days, the only issues with KDE 4.1 that are bothersome for me are:
- no Alt-F2 (so it's necessary to "kdesu konqueror" in the terminal, for example)
- Dolphin and Konqueror both crash if you right-click in a whitespace (so you have to use Edit>Paste, for example, to paste a file)
That's it -- there are workarounds to the issues that I found. Compiz is working pretty well -- less than 100% reliable on auto-starting, but it starts from fusion-icon every time.

I like this article:
http://troy-at-kde.livejournal.com/16734.html
but this makes me think:
Quote from the article:
While I can easily identify this article as the ranting of a single user, who, as domain claims, likes to rant. The comments are what bother me. Feel free to read them all and see if it's just reaction to imperfect distro packages for 4.0, or what. From some of the comments: "I agree with you there. I discovered KDE4 by downloading the KDE4 version of Kubuntu. I do not recall it saying anywhere that it was beta, a work in progress, or a concept demonstration. It was passed off to the naive user as a new GUI option. THAT is what is most wrong with KDE4: the premature promotion of it as working software."
Now, I've never tried the kubuntu 4.x packages, and maybe they are just bad, but I'm not sure where they got the impression that 4.0 was no longer a work in progress. I mean, I guess not all the users read the KDE news, or managed to read some of our promotional signals during the 4.0 release phase (which were clearly about where 4.x was going in the future, and not all about 4.0 being the second coming of Christ...)

Hi,
I updated my kubuntu 8.04 from KDE 4.04 to 4.1 beta ca. 5 days ago. Everything looks very nice and is more or less stable.
But I have the problem, that plasma uses 80% of my CPU time, all the time. So 5 minutes after startup I can roast some eggs on the backside of my notebook. At KDE 4.04 I did not have that problem.
Now I decided to go back to 4.04. But without that little problem, I would have never thougt about this.

Damn, I do not now if it happend by accident or by telepathy, but while I was reading your post I recognized that I missed that little "minimze all" widget in the taskbar. I thougt I had removed all widgets for testing.
Now everythings is all right and I do not have to go back to KDE 4.0.
So little widget big effect.
Thank you!!!

KDE 4.1 Beta 2 is out (almost ;) ) > KDE 4.1 Beta 2 Release Announcement (http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-4.1-beta2.php)
Kubuntu repositories (Intrepid Ibex) are updating. Here Kubuntu is already telling:
$ kde4-config --version
Qt: 4.4.0
KDE: 4.00.83 (KDE 4.0.83 (KDE 4.1 Beta2)
kde4-config: 1.0
but some packages are still Beta 1 (Konqueror, Dolphin...)

$ kde4-config --version
Qt: 4.4.0
KDE: 4.00.83 (KDE 4.0.83 (KDE 4.1 Beta2)
kde4-config: 1.0
I get that as well. :)
Some things are stiil strange though:
As posted elsewhere:
http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3094578.new;topicseen#new
Klipper was not installed and when I installed it with apt-get it installed a bunch of gnome stuff as well. Synaptic included.
I prefer synaptic-kde and it works again in kde4 (at least for now)
after todays update (interpid):
no kdesudo kate (konqueror, systemsettings,etc)
kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/systemsettings
or
kdesudo /usr/bin/systemsettings
don't work either.
but running gksudo kate (etc) works ??? ???
gksudo synaptic and others want to be started with gksudo ??? ???
I also noticed that the little error "could not start /user/bin/kate" still pops up and that moving apps to favorites and / or panel loses the icons (again)
Kate still doesn't have a working "open previous"
not only does klipper not show up / start, nor does knetworkmanager (installed)
Samba still does not show the files in a share folder.
Putting apps in favorites or panel purges the icon and makes them unstartable.
Putting the full path:
Url=file:///home/fintan2/.local/share/applications/kde4/synaptic.desktop in plasma-appletrc and kickoffrc does nothing.
Klauncher / plasma error still pops up with stuff like kate from anywhere /panel, kickoff or "run command"
Edit: after todays (24.06.08) update:
Neither synaptic nor adept-manager start at all from kickoff :( "executable not found")
Edit 2:
FF asks which version of Flash you want to install :)

For those who also want to live more 'on the edge' but still use Hardy, can now try out Project Neon's nightly builds of KDE4:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~project-neon/+archive
These sit alongside your normal kde exactly the same way as the kde4 packages do, it adds a kde4-nightly option to kdm.
Not a huge difference between the versions, but if you want to check out a recent bugfix or option, its an easy way to try it out

I did another update today (Intrepid)
kde4.1 bet2 is very sweat except for (at least for now):
running kdesudo kate shows me all my -txt files in ~ pertaining to kate
running kdesudo konqueror shows me the same pertaining to konqueror
but neither kate nor konqueror will start with "root" permisions.
Nice trick but not very useful for running an app as "root"
Hmm.... I am sure I will find more ;)
Running kdesudo kate in a terminal:
fintan1@fintanws2:~$ kdesudo kate
The program 'kdesudo' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install kdesudo
bash: kdesudo: command not found
fintan1@fintanws2:~$
but gksudo kate works :P
Installing kdesudo-kde4 from synaptic gives:
(Reading database ... 123273 files and directories currently installed.)

kmail is hosed with the new update
kmail: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/kde4/lib/libkdepim.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZN13KRichTextEdit17mouseReleaseEventEP11QMouseEve nt
gwenview depends on libkipi5 and wants to uninstall libkipi0, which digikam depends on, so you can't have both gwenview-kde4 and digikam installed now.

akregator is reporting a similar error:
akregator: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/kde4/lib/libkdepim.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZN13KRichTextEdit17mouseReleaseEventEP11QMouseEve nt
They're still at version 4.0.80 and not 4.0.83 like all other packages update in beta 2.
They're either still compiling (as the announcement on the front page suggests) or have not been updated to support beta 2 as yet.

@claydoh:
Not a huge difference between the versions, but if you want to check out a recent bugfix or option, its an easy way to try it out
I wanted to try that form HH kde4 remax upgraded to kde 4.1 beta2
So I put these in the repos:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/project-neon/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/project-neon/ubuntu hardy main
and did a refresh.
Looked in synaptic and chose "new in repositories" and install the nightly stuff I could think:
kde-nightly-base, etc
but my synaptic is not finishing correctly.
So my questions:
How can I get synaptic to behave?
And if not is there a way to do it with adept?
Failing that which packages do I have to install with sudo apt-get install?
Thank you all for any help :)

I have the same problem with synaptic on my HH remix upgraded to beta2.
Open up adept and search for nightly. Install the relevant packages and you should be good to rock.
I am using it right now and showing it off to some biz friends of mine :D
Looks pretty sweet in the details. Thank you claydoh :)
Now if only kdesudo would work without the full path and the "command not found" error, klipper would start up without using .autostart and ark would work from dolphin / konqueror I would be a happy man ;)

??? Here with the Intrepid kdesudo is working. Though - ;) - sometimes i need to use kdesudo konqueror before i can use kdesudo dolphin ???
and ark would work from dolphin / konquero
Do you mean sevice menus: Compress Here, Extract Here and Extract to subdirectory ?
If so, maybe this helps > Topic: Service Menus with Dolphin (http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3088743.0) and there > Service menus Kubuntu Intrepid Ibex (pre-alpha), KDE 4.1 (Beta 2). (http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3088743.msg136869#msg136869)
Note !
Intrepid Ibex only has ark version: 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu3 (and ark-kde4 but that is version 4.0.3) Maybe it is this > KubuntuIntrepidVersion (https://wiki.kubuntu.org/KubuntuIntrepidVersion?highlight=(Intrepid))
KDE 3 and KDE 4 libraries can exist side by side so where there is no stable KDE 4 application, we can keep the KDE 3 application.
When i tried Debian KDE 4.1:
Ark (v.4) was horribly broken - have to use GTK frontend (xarchive)
Alpha - Ark did not work at all.
Beta1 - Ark extracted all bit and pieces to the same directory.

Thank you rog.
Those files seem to do the trick with intrepid.
I wonder if it works in HH remix 4.1 beta2 as well ;)
I will soon find out :D
The intrepid solution did not work for HH remix kde4.1 beta2
(I know I am lazy copy/paste ;) )
The Gutsy version worked though.
2) Making text files:
ark35_compress.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Service
X-KDE-ServiceTypes=KonqPopupMenu/Plugin,all/all
Actions=compressHere
[Desktop Action compressHere]
Name=Compress Here
Exec=/usr/bin/ark --add-to %u %u.tar.gz
Icon=ark
ark35_extract.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Service
X-KDE-ServiceTypes=KonqPopupMenu/Plugin
MimeType=application/*;
Actions=extractHere
[Desktop Action extractHere]
Name=Extract Here
Exec=/usr/bin/ark --extract-to %d %u
Icon=ark
ark35_extract_subdir.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Service
X-KDE-ServiceTypes=KonqPopupMenu/Plugin
MimeType=application/*;
Actions=ExtractSubdir
[Desktop Action ExtractSubdir]
Name=Extract to subdirectory
Icon=ark
Exec=/usr/bin/ark -caption "%c" %i %m --guess-name --extract-to "%d" "%u"
3) Dropping .desktop files to the /usr/lib/kde4/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus
again many thanks ;D
One down two to go:
klipper and kdesudo

Todays Intrepid upgrade (75 packages), one of them was ark (4:3.5.9-0ubuntu3) to (4:4.0.83-0ubuntu6).
Note that with the ark 4.0.83 there are only one option:
ark --help
Usage: ark [Qt-options] [KDE-options] [KDE-tempfile-options] [url]
KDE Archiving tool
Generic options:
--help Show help about options
--help-qt Show Qt specific options
--help-kde Show KDE specific options
--help-kde-tempfile Show KDE-tempfile specific options
--help-all Show all options
--author Show author information
-v, --version Show version information
--license Show license information
-- End of options
Arguments:
url URL of an archive to be opened
So, no more sevice menus: Compress Here, Extract Here and Extract to subdirectory with the ark.

I tried it for a couple of weeks and then deleted it off all my machines. What a disappointment. I saw little in the way of real improvements and lots of broken functionality. I was shocked by simple things like not opening rar files. I have to say that the only thing more underwhelming than hardy was kde4. Oh well kde3 still works fine.

I just came across this:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Extract+And+Compress+KDE4?content=84206&PHPSESSID=a6a12e6257c40063882648bd8034ce00
Extract and install with:
./install.sh
then do:
sudo apt-get install p7zip bunzip2 bzip2 gzip rar unrar tar zip unzip
you may have to remove bunzip as it couldn't be found on my setup :P
It works in Intrepid ;D
edit:
Have to figure out HH remix kde4.1 beta.
gzip couldn't be found on my HH setup.
In HH the service menus show in dolphin but gives an error:
cannot find program........
Have to edit the .desktop files but not sure how, or rather to what :P ???

That seems to be an ongoing problem with HH KDE4 Remix from start to KDE4.1 Beta 2. Not just with the service menus but other things as well. The system can't find certain Apps for a user and when running KDESUDO. Very annoying indeed.

Well I finally got it to where I could log into my KDE 4.1 I had to delete my .kde4 folder. I think that I can actually use 4.1 I wish that I could hide my panels but I will just wait for the next release to come around for that. At least with this go around I can now move my panels to the tops of my screens. Way to go KDE you just landed yourself another 4.1 user. I will still leave my 3.5 installed for the time being but 4.1 looks like I can use it.

I think the default Theme isn't quite right. There are many 3.0 Themes now over at FireFox. Give one a try. Aero Silver Fox Basic is the one I'm using right now and it looks great.

I find the tabs in:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7574
are much nicer looking, but, clearly, these are the two best themes for ff3 today.
Edit: I take that back... the claydoh link is quite a bit worse since it doesn't fix the toolbar rendering problem...

kde4.1 is here ;D
On my HH kde3 / kde4.1 setup:
-Kate-kde4 / kde3 still doesn't start from the panel
-Dolphin is very slow when right clicking on a file or choosing a file / directory.
I wonder where those tabs are ???

File -> New Tab.
Also, turning off the Information panel has helped with some Dolphin problems.

Thank you. I also found a solution:
settings-->toolbarsettings (or something, mine is in german) and adding "add new tab "/ "remove tab" to the toolbar.
Now to keep the tab view permanent?
As for the info panel. Well I like that nd need it it a lot.
I just wish we could have those edit as root, etc. back ???
This works great for unpacking and compressing:
http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Extract+And+Compress+KDE4?content=84206
once installed the right click functions are back to normal :)
