View Full Version : Resolution larger than screen - **FIXED**

I am using an NVidia 6800 card, and a 24" Samsung 243T widescreen monitor. At some point after installing, I was able to get 1920x1200 resolution working fine. I had some issues with installing Compiz and other things (new to linux) and decided to wipe and rebuild.
Running Kubuntu 7.10, if I set the reoslution to 1920x1200 it is larger than my screen, and i have to more the mouse to the edges to get the actual desktop to scroll up on the screen.
Hardware has not changed since the first install, but I can't get it to work this time around. I have tried to reconfigure my xorg.conf file using the command: sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg.
Any ideas where I can look?

Have you installed the Nvidia proprietary driver? I use Envy to do that:
http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3086232.0
And then, once the driver is installed, you can run (in a console window)
sudo nvidia-settings and set the default resolution and refresh rates as you want them.

Awesome dibl!
That worked, and my screen is once again crisp and sharp.
I had the linux-restricted driver to enable 3d acceleration...but I guess that is not what Envy grabbed for me.
I added your post you gave to my Kubuntu folder in my bookmarks :)

I'm having this very same problem!
I installed with envy the nvidia driver
thing is sudo nvidia-settings opens up and I can only see half of it on my screen.
after a lot of playing around i managed to see the other half but it only had UPTO 640x480
so I uninstalled the envy version and got the driver from the nvidia site.
and I got the same problem again
everything ran great on feisty so it's not my card.
Geforce 7950 GX2
64Bit Kubuntu 7.10
I'm running nv driver right now but i have no 3D
can anyone help or point me in the right direction?
thanks

That's an unusual problem. I wonder if there's anything about your display that is related to this problem -- is it a CRT or LCD? Is it very old or very new? Which output from your Nvidia card are you using -- DVI?
You say the "nv" driver works better than the one that Envy installed? That's even more weird.
One thing you might consider, if you haven't done it already, is to try the new ver. 169.07 Nvidia driver. You'll have to download it from their web site, and the installation instructions are for generic Linux and are missing a piece for *buntu. If you follow the instructions that Alberto Milone wrote on his site here:
http://albertomilone.com/latest_nvidia_udsf_feisty.html#HOWTO:_Latest_NVIDI A_drivers
Don't worry about the fact that he wrote it for Feisty -- the process is the same. Follow this process, using the downloaded 169.07 driver, and you may have success.

Gooday all. I have a new monitor and had some problems with it last week. I ended up in the s#!t up to my ears and did a complete re-install. Just reading this post has helped me a lot. My new monitor dimensions are 1680x1050. So now I spose I have to change that in the nvidia settings. Can you walk me through how to do that? I have the settings screen open. TiA. Regards, James.

@wavemaker, the thing is, if you change it as "user", the settings will not be changed in xorg.conf. So, you can change it and see if it works, and if it does, then you need to open a Konsole window and
sudo nvidia-settings so that you are in Super User mode, and then change it and click the "Save to X Configuration File" button, and save it. Then it will be the default setting.

Gooday again. Sorry about the thread jack. I did that and it makes the screen move over to about half the page. The reason I want to change it is the wallpaper photo and the screen saver slide show don't look quite right.
